The Three Of Us
Toh Kay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I will never defend the men who make amends with any enemy's friends,
I will never pretend.

There we were, the three of us,
The thief, the king and I.
Finally, we were forced to see,
We were equals in the night.
Looking down between the trees,
And the town we knew we had to leave.
For what it's worth,
We will walk the Earth til we find the things we seek.

And the king said:
I believe I'm a non-believer now.
I was a leader, but I had to leave them all.
No one will ever know the things I held inside,
So let them go.

Oh my god, oh my god, yes, oh my god.

I will never defend the men who make amends with any enemy's friends,
I will never pretend.
I will never bow down to another man even when everyone's sayin' I've sinned,
I will never repent.

Woahhh, woahhh.
Woahhh, woahhh, woah.

They will not protect, we will fall.
They will not defend us.
We'll be left behind, we'll be left behind.
I never give a damn about the story's end,
Or even how it all began.
And the one word that I'll seek is one that I can tell myself.
And it's a long and winding road,
But if you reap the seeds you sow,
You'll see you're really not alone.

I will never defend the men who make amends with any enemy's friends,
I will never pretend.
I will never bow down to another man even when everyone's sayin' I've sinned,
I will never repent.

(Drum, Bass, Guitar, Saxophone breakdown m/)
(Solos)

There we were, the three of us,
The priest, the tramp, and I.
Years ago, we had left to roam,
But reunited on that night.

No one had to speak a word,
For we all knew what the others learned.
And everything that we ever did,
Was but a way to pass the time.

And the priest said:
I believe I'm a true believer now,
I was a sinner, but I came to see the light.
The bum and me did not agree, but I must confess of jealousy.

Oh my god, oh my god, yes, oh my god.

I will never defend the men who make amends with any enemy's friends,
I will never pretend.
I will never bow down to another man even when everyone's sayin' I've sinned,
I will never repent.

Unless there's evidence.
Unless there's evidence!

Overall Meaning

The song "The Three of Us" by Toh Kay is a story about three characters - the thief, the king, and the singer - who've found themselves in a difficult situation. They're looking down at the town they know they must leave and realize that they are equals in the darkness. The king confesses that he is now a non-believer, and he had to leave his followers behind. As they walk on a long and winding road, they come across two other characters, the priest, and the tramp. Years after they had parted ways, they reunite on this night.

The song speaks to the themes of equality, self-belief, and self-discovery. The singer, throughout the song, asserts that he will not defend or pretend, bow down or repent unless there is evidence. He seeks the one word that he can tell himself, even if the story's end is not of his concern. The lyrics expound that every experience and everything that they did was merely the way to pass the time, and all these misadventures have led them to where they are today. They realize that they don't need to prove themselves to anyone, and they will walk the Earth until they find what they seek.

Toh Kay's "The Three of Us" is inspired by the book "The Thief, the Fool, and the Big Fat King" by Terry Pratchett. The song portrays the writer's story through his own lens.
