The Sound
Tom Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is there a sweeter sound than times when your dreams have come around
And finding you beat the drowning of the doubt it seems you found
No one can keep you in the times you were set to let them win
Times you were letting in and looking out and not within
But now, you turned the light around so it's shining on you now
You turned your life around and see it now – see all you found
Is there a sweeter view than all that is there in front of you
And all that is left to do and set for you to find the new
No one can keep you down, no one can keep the good you found
For now you can see the good that's all around – it's all around you now
You turned the light around so it's shining on you now
You turned your life around so go see all you found
And turn the light around so it's shining on them now
You turned your life around and see it now – see all you found
But now, you turned the light around so it's shining on you now
You turned your life around so go see all you found
And turn the light around so it's shining on them now
You turned your life around and see it now – see all you found

See all the love
See all the weight of all the world and then just throw it to the ground

Overall Meaning

The Sound of Silence is a song by Simon and Garfunkel, released in 1964. It is one of the most iconic songs of the era and is notable for its poetic lyrics and haunting melody. The lyrics of the song are filled with vivid imagery and metaphors that evoke feelings of isolation, loneliness, and hopelessness.

The song begins with the singer addressing darkness, which is personified as an old friend with whom he has come to talk again. The singer was shown a vision while sleeping, and the remnants of it still linger in his mind, within the sound of silence. The singer then shares his experience of walking alone in the night while the streets are empty, and the neon lights illuminate the city. The people he encounters are talking without words being significant, and they seem to be going through the motions of life without really living it.

The singer then tries to warn the people, to teach them to listen to their inner selves, but they don't. They are too busy worshipping the "neon god" that they have made. Finally, he discovers that the "words of the prophets" are written on the walls of the subways and tenement halls.

The song gained immortality after it was used in the movie 'The Graduate', coated with a sparse, moody arrangement of acoustic guitar and mournful harmonies. This song was written by Paul Simon in 1964 in his washroom. "The Sound of Silence" started out as a flop, selling only about 2000 copies upon its initial release. It became a hit in late 1965 after it was overdubbed with electric instrumentation, including drums. This was one of the first songs to address the problem of the generation gap between parents and youth. The lyrics of the Sound of Silence continue to resonate with people today, just like they did in the 1960s. The line, "And the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls" was inspired by graffiti Paul Simon saw on the walls of a New York subway station.

The song was originally titled "The Sounds of Silence" but was changed to the singular form because it sounded better. This song has been covered and interpreted by numerous artists over the decades, including Disturbed, who released an electrifying version of the song in 2015. This song has become a cultural touchstone, representing the spirit of the 60s and the 'rebel' nature of youth. The Sound of Silence has won two Grammy awards, one in 1968 and the other in 2017 (for Disturbed's version of the song). Here are the chords for "The Sound of Silence": Am Em G F Am F C Dm.

I've had this video on my Watch Later list for about three/four years, until YouTube reminded me of it on my homepage just now before heading to bed. So happy I finally got to give it a good watch. Poorly made or not, it was the most entertaining thing I've ever seen in a long time! Can't believe I skipped it for so long. πŸ˜…
