Free Fallin'
Tom & Heartbreakers Petty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America, too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend, too

And it's a long day livin' in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy, 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

All the vampires walkin' through the valley
Move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls are home with broken hearts

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'
Now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin'

I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I'm gonna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for a while

And I'm free (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Free fallin' (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Yeah I'm free (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Free fallin' (free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
(Now I'm)

(Free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
Yeah, I'm free, free fallin'
Oh! Free fallin'
Now I'm free fallin'
Free fallin'
(Free fallin', now I'm free fallin')
And I'm free
(Free fallin', now I'm free fallin')

Oh, free fallin'
(Free fallin', now I'm free fallin')

Overall Meaning

"Free Fallin'" is a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song that tells the story of a good girl named "She," who is obsessed with Elvis, loves horses, and also adores America, Jesus and her mom. The song's narrator is a bad boy from Reseda who broke her good girl's heart and doesn't even miss her. The freeway that runs through the neighborhood and the vampires and bad boys wandering around the valley sound like a metaphor for the West Coast living scene that seduces and ruins young dreamers. Still, the singer finds hope in the simplicity of the lyrics' final lines, where he just wants to glide down Mulholland and write his girl's name in the sky, escaping from the world and its heartbreaks for a while.

The song is often interpreted as a critique of the L.A. or Hollywood lifestyle and the perils of living there. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Tom Petty said about the song: "I didn't really understand that song until ten years after I recorded it. I was in L.A., and my car came on the radio. The guy [on the radio] said, 'I want to dedicate this to all the kids out there in Reseda and Van Nuys, all the losers out there.' I nearly drove off the freeway. I thought, 'Wait a minute. I'm a Valley kid. I grew up in Reseda. [My wife and I] had an apartment right off Ventura. All my friends lived there. These aren't losers. These are cool people, if anybody is cool.' But the thing that bothered me most was that he said 'the kids out there.' 'Free Fallin',' to me, felt like an adult song. It felt like someone who understood life."

Just missing Tom today. And every day.

This has to be one of the best albums in Rock history. It's perfect.

I moved across the country only to have my apartment fall through on arrival. Me and my dog had to shack up with a stranger for 6 months.

When I got my place I cranked my Stereo (no neighbors) and danced to Apartment Song with my dog. That was a long time ago, but Tom was there.

Full Moon Fever is my favorite Petty album. Probably because it was my first Tom Petty cassette and I played that fucker till it disintegrated and bought another.

Wildflowers is my next favorite, even before the re-release launched it all the way to whatever gig Tom's playing now.

Tom, I love you more than my clumsy words can say. I miss you so damn bad.
