The Show
Tom Flannery Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Can't lift my arm to comb my hair
Just one more game to get back up there
Fastball dragging some at 85
Slept in ice the entire 12 hour drive
We come overnight from Omaha
With that hanging curve sticking in my craw
Out in front he ripped it down the line
And for me it was miller time

The kids they all call me old man
I try to help 'em when I can
Sometimes I catch 'em when they stare
They're thinking what the hell were you doing up there?
About the show this much is clear
It's better up there than it is down here
Went into Wrigley and I mowed 'em down
And I was the talk of Houston town

Just one more day in the show
To savor when I go
If you let me grow old I'll do it gracefully
Paint the corners black just wait and see
Down here time moves so slow
Just one more day in the show

I could make that radar gun dance
Going every 4th day without a backward glance
6 and 2 by the end of May
Everyone lining up to hear what I had to say
In Philly I landed funny off the mound
That's where I heard the popping sound
Now it was cortizone and daily mass
With a fastball that couldn't break glass

Lost 7 of 9 thowing mostly junk
Mopped up a few when my sinker sunk
Then they sent me down hoping for the best
5 years on I still can't rest
I go Thursday night in Abeliene
With a lot of phone calls in between
My little girl says daddy when you coming home
I tell her sweetheart I just don't know

Just one more day in the show
To savor when I go
If you let me grow old I'll do it gracefully
Paint the corners black just wait and see

Down here time moves so slow
Just one more day in the show

Overall Meaning

The song "The Show" by Tom Flannery is a touching and melancholic reflection from a former baseball player whose glory days have come and gone. The lyrics are filled with vivid imagery that convey the physical and emotional tolls that the sport took on him. He laments his current state by saying that he can't even lift his arm to comb his hair, and that his fastball is now dragging at 85. Despite these setbacks, he remembers the thrill of being on the field and relishes in memories of one last game where he made a key play that clinched victory.

The lyrics also reflect the camaraderie and mentorship that often happens between older and younger players in a team. The singer affectionately refers to the younger players as "kids" and offers advice and help when he can. He acknowledges their curiosity and wonder at his past success, and says that he understands their confusion about why he would still want to play despite his age and physical limitations. He muses that "it's better up there than it is down here," further emphasizing the importance and allure of the baseball field.

Overall, "The Show" is a poignant and introspective look at the joys and sorrows of a life dedicated to baseball. It is a tribute to the struggles and triumphs that are inherent in the game and to the lifelong passions that it inspires in its players and fans.

Tim Flannery is the second best comedian after Michael Mann.

Just to add to this. Ontario is the global gold standard for emissions. Right at this very moment that I'm writing this. We are producing 14,854MW of electricity, of which only %1.7 is emiting CO2. Feel free to look at the data here: https://www.ieso.ca/power-data (press supply tab). This is something we should be very proud of.

Also, that carbon sequestering you're talking about might be the best way to make air planes carbon neutral. Elon wants that technology in part for finding a better way to fuel rockets.

The one "good" thing about the pandemic....Mother Earth got a bit of a break. I do hope the large industries rise to the occasion and do what is right.

China is building 300 coal-fired power plants by 2030. They haven't even begun to peak and reduce emissions. USA and UK peaked 10 years ago and have been decommissioning coal-fired power plants. The lack of focus on China is remarkable and makes one wonder if the level of alarm by some is sincere and truly fact-based. China is going in the wrong direction still and Greta never mentions them and still hasn't gone there, or India.

Tim Flannery is an absolute joke here in Australia. Has been wrong on just about every prediction he's ever made. Sydney damn never gonna fill up again! 😂 😂 😂
