If I Was Black
Tom MacDonald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I was black, probably wouldn′t fuck with anyone who's white
′Cause that slavery shit would honestly always be on my mind
If I was black, probably wouldn't ever wanna drive
'Cause if police pull me over, I might fuck around and die
If I was black, I won′t lie, I′d be scared to walk at night
The whole neighborhood is trippin' like I′m out committin' crimes
I′d be pissed at all these cracker rappers singin' ′bout my life
Stole my music, stole my style, give it back, that shit is mine

If I was black, just look at the facts, we don't stand a chance
One in three is locked away, over half don't know they dad
See, white privilege ain′t a money thing
But it′s white people who are runnin' things
Y′all benefit from your colorin', my pigment produce sufferin′
It's all white pride, white power
White lies, white houses, white guys, white washin′
My brothers, my sisters, my culture, while I'm watchin'
If I was black I′d probably hate myself from shit they say
Racism made me racist and I am not the one to blame

Ayy, y′all won't say it to my face, in the circles you feel safe
Y′all been usin' words they made for us when we were slaves
Ayy, hey, wait, woah, I know that was long ago
If I was black I′d want my reparation money paid in full

If I was black I'd say fuck the police
I′d say fuck the whole Klan, I'd put holes in these sheets
If I was black I'd put gold on my teeth
So if you think I′m broke you would know when I speak
If I was black, it′s my face on the tee
R.I.P underneath or my name next to free
If I was black I would die in these streets
Just for speakin' my mind ′cause I had a dream
If I was black

If I was black, probably wouldn't ever do my taxes
Why support a government that persecute my blackness?
Or pay the wage of law enforcement puttin′ us in caskets?
Or help to build the prisons that we trapped in?
If I was black I'd be mad, people glorify the trap
While we dyin′ everyday fightin' for everything we have
It ain't diamond chains and racks, this the systematic plan
They put us the in the ghetto, gave us HIV and crack

If I was black I′d hate America, appropriate my character
And sell it to Caucasians who wish they were from my area
If I was black I wouldn′t give a fuck about the greater good
My grandma can't afford her rent, y′all gentrified our neighborhood
All lives matter, so stupid, y'all hijackin′ our movement
Black lives matter 'cause we losin′ innocent youth of police shootin' us
If I was black, the only role models I'm shown
Is the rich black rappers, pushin′ guns and drugs and hoes
(Yeah)

You'd attack when I say it, I′m proud
'Cause you mad that you ain′t allowed
(If I was black)
Y'all ever try to take me down
One fist in the air I would stand my ground

If I was black I'd say fuck the police
I′d say fuck the whole Klan, I′d put holes in they sheets
If I was black I'd put gold on my teeth
So if you think I′m broke you would know when I speak
If I was black, it's my face on the tee
R.I.P underneath or my name next to free
If I was black I would die in these streets

Just for speakin′ my mind 'cause I had a dream
If I was black

Overall Meaning

The song "If I Was Black" by Tom MacDonald is an expression of empathy towards the black community. If the artist were black, he would understand the traumatic experiences that they endure. The first verse implies that black people are likely to feel apprehensive about interacting with white people because of the historical implications of slavery. Police brutality is also a significant issue that the black community has to face daily. The artist acknowledges that if he were black, he would be afraid to walk at night because society has stereotyped black people as criminals. Meanwhile, he would feel offended by white rappers who appropriate black culture without giving credit where it's due.

The second verse explains the systematic and institutionalized discrimination that black people face. Tom MacDonald claims that the majority of the prison population consists of black people. White people who are in power benefit from their skin color, while black people suffer because of theirs. Black people struggle to access basic human needs, such as decent housing and healthcare, while the government continues to fund dangerous and harmful entities such as police departments and the prison system. Even today, gentrification and appropriation of black culture is still a problem that further marginalizes the black community. The chorus repeats twice, emphasizing the artist's empathy and understanding towards the issues that the black community is facing.

What I'm about to say is meant as a compliment, in no way am I suggesting that this video is anything other than what he intended it to be....

Having recently discovered Tom, I've made it through probably about 90 plus percent of his tunes.
And I've noticed something, and it stuck out to me but it never says it in any video:
So he's not only making the songs that project and amplify what he stands for and/or believes in....
He also writes songs that address the dichotomy, meaning from the opposite point of view, a more colloquial terms, he addresses his own stuff from the point of view of a "hater"....
As I was first listening, I would become curious about different aspects of his message, and usually within 3 to 5 songs later, I find a song that answers that question LOL....

So here's the big point, propaganda works very similar to what he's doing here.
Good propaganda created by good propagandists does not merely just put their message out there, they also put out a subset of the extreme version of their message....
(Which makes the main narrative sound like more of a compromise)

Then, unhinged, voices with no nuance and usually of a lower intellect with previously noted extremist views are artificially propped up by the very same people putting out the opposite message. They do this to ensure that the RATIONAL FREE THINKERS are suppressed and lost within all the noise.

This basically ensures that the average Joe never hears nuanced, middle path, across the board common Sense solutions to the very problems the people created that are offering the solutions.

This ensures that the idiot-average-Joe sees the insanity of some guy screaming about reptiles or people from Israel or pizzas.... It will be an immediate deterrent from even going down that road. However the extremely use will contain a percentage of Truth, and once it is determined that that part of the truth is associated with the crazy people, it automatically shuts down any conversation with people who actually dig deep and provide real unbiased information because of the inconvenience that crazy people are also raising hell about that matter....

What I'm saying is, his music kind of works like that. He has built a spider web of cultural structure that is three-dimensional where he's looking in on himself and then back at itself in every direction.
He's basically shutting down haters preemptively.
Also instead of suppressing the dark Truth, he puts his own flaws and negative attributes out ahead of anyone who may attempt to dox him or call him out.

He's built a very strong perimeter wall around his art. Just remember, if you don't understand how the mainstream narratives and propaganda work, listen to all these songs and then change the subject from Tom McDonald to whatever subject it is you're wondering about...
