While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Tom Petty Jeff Lynne Steve Winwood Dhani Harrison and Prince Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps

I don't know why nobody told you
How to unfold your love
I don't know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you

I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
With every mistake we must surely be learning
Still my guitar gently weeps

(Guitar Solo)

I don't know why you were diverted
You were perverted too
I don't know how you were inverted
No one alerted you

I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
Look at you all
Still my guitar gently weeps

(Epic Guitar Solo by Prince)

Look at you all

Still my guitar gently wheeps

Look at you all

Still my guitar gently wheeps

Look at you all

Still my guitar gently wheeps

Look at you all

Still my guitar gently wheeps

Look at you all

Still my guitar gently wheeps

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "... see the love there that's sleeping/While my guitar gently weeps" suggest that the singer is looking at a person or a group of people he cares about who are unaware of the love that exists within them. The guitar serves as a metaphor for the emotions and love that are unexpressed, yet ready to be awakened. The metaphor of the unexpressed emotions is extended in the second verse, as the singer expresses confusion over why someone (the person or people he is talking about) was "bought and sold" and "controlled." He then acknowledges the mistakes that we all make and the lessons to be learned from them, returning to the image of the guitar gently weeping.

The guitar solos in the song, particularly the famous one played by Prince, are often interpreted as the emotional release that the singer (and perhaps Prince himself) cannot express in words. The repetition of the closing lines "Look at you all/Still my guitar gently weeps" reinforces the idea that the emotions are still unexpressed, and the people the singer cares about are still unaware of the love that exists within them.

@KrazySpydrLady

Rolling Stone once asked Eric Clapton in an interview: "What's it like being the greatest living guitarist?"

His answer: "Go ask Prince!"

And now that will be a lone comment as well as a reply

This was Prince’s response to being snubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 guitarists. He certainly proved his point here. And the strutting off stage at the end. Priceless.

@johnmoore4714

Exactly because rolling stone was in attendance that night. That strut at end was directed at them. "Take that"💪🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

@KarenRobin2072

Prince didn’t do this in rehearsal. That’s why he kept looking at Petty to see if it was okay to keep going. Petty was happy to oblige and keep singing the chorus while Prince had his moment.

@cirdancescles4370

@@KarenRobin2072 exactly! Not sure if petty knew before or not, but what are you going to do? That’s PRINCE!
