California Snow
Tom Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm just tryin' to make a livin'
I'm an old man at thirty-nine
With two kids and an ex-wife
Who moved up to Riverside
I'm workin' down on the border
Drivin' back roads every night
Mountains east of El Cajon
North of the Tecate line.

Where the California summer sun
Will burn right through your soul
But in the winter you can freeze to death
In the California snow.

I catch the ones I'm able to
And watch the others slip away
I know some by their faces
And I even know some by name
I guess they think that we're all
Movie stars and millionaires
I guess that they still believe
That dreams come true up here.

But I guess the weather's warmer down in Mexico
And no one ever tells them 'bout the California snow.

Last winter I found a man and wife
Just about daybreak
Layin' in a frozen ditch
South of the interstate
I wrapped 'em both in blankets
But she'd already died
The next day we sent him back alone
Across the borderline.

I don't know where they came from
Or where they planned to go
But we carried her all night long
Through the California snow.

Sometimes when I'm alone out here
I get to thinkin' about my life
Maybe I should go to Riverside
And try to fix things with my wife
Or maybe just get in my truck
And drive as far as I can go
Away from all the ghosts that haunt
The California snow.

Where the California summer sun
Can burn right to your soul
And in the winter you can freeze to death
In the California snow.

Overall Meaning

The song "California Snow" by Tom Russell is a melancholy reflection on life as a border patrol agent in California. The singer is a 39-year-old man who is trying to make a living by working on the border and patrolling every night. He has two children and an ex-wife who moved to Riverside, leaving him alone to do this job. The singer knows the area like the back of his hand, with mountains and roads north of the Tecate line, but he's constantly under the searing sun of the California summer or the freezing winter of California's snow.

The singer has a tough job, and he watches people slip away or cross the border without getting caught. He knows some of them by their faces and even by their names. But the people who try to cross the border from Mexico think that California is the land of opportunities, where dreams come true for all. The singer knows that reality is different, and he's seen the struggles and death that can happen in this unforgiving territory. One winter, he finds a man and his wife in a frozen ditch, and he tries to save them by wrapping them in blankets. Sadly, the woman dies, and the man is sent back to Mexico, leaving the singer with the ghosts of the past and the present.

Overall, "California Snow" is a poignant tribute to the harsh realities of life on the border, and it's a reminder that things are not always what they seem in California. The song shows the insecurities and struggles of those who try to make a living on this land of extremes, where reality can be crueler than one might imagine.

This is such a lovely song. I wonder how long it will take for people who have been blessed with so much to shake off the fear that has frozen our hearts and share a little piece of our dream with our neighbors who have so little. Dreams can come true up here again if we will just left go of the greed and the hate.

Although I saw Tom Russell over 30 years ago at some dive on Long Island  and bought an LP, I lost touch with him, and have only recently rediscovered him. He is awesome to say the least, and his songs have added poignancy for me since my wife is Central American with quite a  chicken coop and a brood of roosters! What a songwriter!
