We've been waiting for so long,
In the hope that you'd drop by our little store.
We may not be accessible
To everyone, it's true,
But we've got everything you want and more.
So many other eyes have held the anguish in your own,
And I believe we have the thing
To satisfy your every black desire.
The things you want are found beyond doors
More obscure than mine,
But they will open if you have the proper key.
The pleasures of the ages
And the tortures of the damned
Are at your fingertips for just a modest fee.
And each sadistic fantasy exceeds the one before,
You'll not believe the wonders to unfold,
The mystery and majesty locked up
Inside this box of black and gold.
You twist it, and you pull it, and you twist a little more,
Then you wait for your new playmates to rise up from the floor.
If you want to buy damnation, I've got some to sell,
Come take a chance and raise a little Hell.
The greatest aphrodisiac
Is power, so they say,
Ambition leads to daring new extremes.
But goals are meant to be fulfilled,
And once you have, your careful-knit
Existence can unravel at the seams.
Contentment leads to boredom, to frustration, to the grave,
A wasted life of emptiness and pain...
Unless, of course, you walk the roads
A lesser man would surely call insane.
The world is made of other worlds
We barely know are there,
And beings that we cannot understand.
Some are helpers, some are healers,
Some have made an art form
Of the vivisection of their fellow man.
You'll marvel at their scrupulous attention to detail,
Creativeness and exquisite technique,
And when they've had you for awhile,
You'll say "I love you" every time you shriek.
They tease you, and caress you, and they slowly break your heart,
Then oh-so-very carefully, they tear your soul apart.
If life means nothing more to you, I think you might as well
Come take a chance and raise a little Hell.
Everything is relative
Within the eyes of God,
Someone's pain brings someone else's delight,
And all it takes is just a subtle
Shift in point of view
To make the wrongs of Man seem good and right.
But I should give you warning that a thing that's done is done,
You cannot just abandon it and go,
And if you try, you may find out
Eternity is longer than you know.
They play with every inch of skin, and seek out every nerve,
An Inquisition giving you what you think you deserve.
Where agony and ecstasy unite, you'll never tell,
Come raise yourself a private little Hell.

A wasted life of emptiness and pain...
A life of futility, devoid of meaning and full of agony
Unless, of course, you walk the roads
Unless, of course, you choose to journey
A lesser man would surely call insane.
A man of lesser fortitude would label as crazy
The world is made of other worlds
The world comprises other dimensions
We barely know are there,
That we are scarcely aware of
And beings that we cannot understand.
And creatures that we are incapable of comprehending
Some are helpers, some are healers,
Some are assistants, some are curers
Some have made an art form
Some have perfected a technique
Of the vivisection of their fellow man.
Of dissecting their fellow human beings
You'll marvel at their scrupulous attention to detail,
You will be amazed by their meticulous attention to particularities
Creativeness and exquisite technique,
And innovative and exceptional methods
And when they've had you for awhile,
And once they have held you captive for a period
You'll say "I love you" every time you shriek.
You will exclaim "I love you" every time you scream in agony
They tease you, and caress you, and they slowly break your heart,
They tantalize and touch you, gradually destroying your spirit
Then oh-so-very carefully, they tear your soul apart.
Then, meticulously, they rip apart your inner essence
If life means nothing more to you, I think you might as well
If life has no other purpose to you, it may be best
Come take a chance and raise a little Hell.
To come take a risk and wreak havoc
Everything is relative
The entirety of existence is dependent on one's viewpoint
Within the eyes of God,
Through divinity's perspective
Someone's pain brings someone else's delight,
An individual's suffering provides another person's enjoyment
And all it takes is just a subtle
An insignificant shift is all that is required
Shift in point of view
Change in one's position
To make the wrongs of Man seem good and right.
To justify mankind's transgressions
But I should give you warning that a thing that's done is done,
However, I should caution you that once a deed is accomplished
You cannot just abandon it and go,
You cannot merely abandon it and depart
And if you try, you may find out
If you attempt to do so, you may learn
Eternity is longer than you know.
That infinity is lengthier than you realize
They play with every inch of skin, and seek out every nerve,
They toy with every part of your flesh and locate every nerve ending
An Inquisition giving you what you think you deserve.
Like an Inquisition giving you what you believe is rightly yours
Where agony and ecstasy unite, you'll never tell,
Where pain and pleasure combine, you will be unable to discern
Come raise yourself a private little Hell.
Come create your own individual Hellish experience

Lyrics if anyone wants them:
Life is unfair, so they tell me,
Because they think I wouldn't know.
They only can see a cheap gimmick
On their children's favorite show.
They say, "Oh, that's just foam and a wire,
Attached to a green velvet sleeve,
Anyone can do that" -- well, that's true, I suppose,
But who else could make them believe?
What can I say without you there to guide me?
How else am I supposed to give?
How can I sing without you there beside me?
How else am I supposed to live?
You could never just do the expected,
I was just an idea in a bog,
But you sewed up your dream and we made quite a team,
Jim and Kermit, a boy and his frog.
It was me, Rolph, and you, but I think that he knew
There was something that you and I had.
The magic we made just kept growing,
And none of it ever was bad.
Then came Ernie and Scooter and Gonzo,
Doctor Teeth, Cookie Monster, and more.
But now all of those voices are silent,
And I want to go on... but what for?
No one can make me what you did,
No one could walk in your shoes,
No one can make me forget you,
But that's not a path that I chose.
I can't just let it be over,
And you wouldn't want it that way,
So I'll stand up and I'll face it,
And, though not quite in your voice, I'll say:
I will go on without you there to guide me,
There's so much more I can give.
Wherever I am, you will be there beside me,
As long as I keep you, you'll live.
We just wanted to make people smile,
I was always much more than your toy.
I will never regret and I'll never forget
What we had,
I'll miss you, Dad,
This frog and his boy.
Xanath in the Northwest
I always cry when I hear this, but to hear Tom choke up on, "I'll miss you, Dad" . . . /heartbreak
We still miss you, Jim.

Jim Henson died before I was born, but I still feel the absence he left in the world. He's one of my heroes, one of the earliest voices of my childhood, and someone I still miss every day. This song comes to me every so often when I think of Jim. It's a beautiful tribute. What he says is true - No one can make Kermit (or by extension, the Muppets) what Jim did. When he died, a piece of real magic left this world with him.

Thought I could make it through this without weeping…people told me about the song and I've never heard it before…NOPE. I lost it at "I'll miss you, Dad."
Critter Keeper
"Not quite in your voice" sets it up, and "I'll miss you, Dad" gets anyone not yet sobbing.
Melissa Gerber
I sobbed, when I realized who was singing, and who it was about.

The most significant thing I took away from Jim Henson's senseless death has remained with me for 24 years: Don't ignore that cough. Seriously.

I went through a short phase immediately after hearing he died of being angry and frustrated with him for waiting too long to get medical help.
I grew up watching Sesame Street, played the theme to the Muppet Show in 7th grade band, and marveled at The Dark Crystal. I did not want him to be gone so soon.
Tears run down my face every time I hear this song.

@Janice H Walking pneumonia is very insidious. We just don't go to the doctor for a simple cold (at least, we didn't, pre-COVID), and that's what it resembles. I remember my mother going to the hospital for walking pneumonia - none of us even suspected how ill she was, and it very nearly killed her. The fever (the one thing that distinguished it from a bad cold) was so high that she lost her hair; it never did grow back in properly after that. So ask your pharmacist or doctor for a pneumonia vaccination, along with your flu and COVID vaccines. It could save your life.

This is the type of song you can play over & over again without getting bored. I love this, Jim was such an inspiration and still is! He's inspired me to carry on drawing during the harshest times of my depression. He's moved me in ways no other 'celeb' or public figure has. He was such a humble person, very quiet & shy but with a big imagination! Just like myself I'd like to think. He will always be missed. Thanks Jim.

I can't believe I never heard about this song until today. It's so very touching and beautiful and a very fitting tribute to Jim Henson. Jim was an amazing man, his legacy lives on.
