As a teenager, Springfield was a talented pianist and occasionally played jazz. Springfield was a founder member of vocal group the Pedini Brothers, active from 1952 to 1955. They mainly sang Latin American, plus Russian songs adapted by Springfield.
In the late fifties Springfield formed the duo, "The Kensington Squares", with folk musician Tim Feild, whom he had met while playing clubs in Belgravia, London. His younger sister, Mary O'Brien (aka Dusty Springfield), was at the time performing as one of the Lana Sisters, and when that group folded in 1960, he invited her to join him and Tim Feild to form a new folk-pop vocal trio, The Springfields.
Springfield wrote many of their major hits - "I'll Never Find Another You", "A World Of Our Own", "The Carnival Is Over" and "Walk with Me", and he co-wrote "Georgy Girl" with Jim Dale: this was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song in 1966.
His other hit compositions include "Adios Amour (Goodbye My Love)", recorded by José Feliciano.
The Springfields' song "Island of Dreams", written by Tom Springfield, has been covered by Mick Thomas, Johnny Tillotson, Mary Hopkin and by The Seekers.
He released two solo albums in the late 1960s, Sun Songs (1968) and Love's Philosophy (1969); these were finally re-released on CD in 2005.
After a 1970 duet single with his sister Dusty, "Morning Please Don't Come", Springfield essentially retired from the music industry as both a writer and performer.

Surely you see that my lover is sleeping
Morning please don't come
Let the night linger on
When the stars have left the sky
We must say fond goodbye
Make the night a little longer
Starshine glow a little stronger
Morning please don't come
Day don't break for you will take
My love away from me
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
Sing sweet nightingale
Sing me a song of a night never-ending
Sing sweet nightingale
And I'll try to pretend
That tomorrow's nowhere near
And there's nothing to fear
Make the night a little longer
Morning please don't come
Starshine glow a little stronger
Morning please don't come
Day don't break for you will take
My love away from me
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
The lyrics to Tom Springfield's song "Morning Please Don't Come" express a desire to extend the night and delay the arrival of morning so that the singer's lover can keep sleeping. The opening lines of the song, "Morning please don't come, surely you see that my lover is sleeping," set the tone for the sentiment of the song. The singer is pleading with the morning to stay away and let the night remain, so that they can enjoy more time with their loved one. The chorus emphasizes this message, with lines like "Make the night a little longer" and "Starshine glow a little stronger."
The verses of the song use pastoral imagery to emphasize the sense of peace and tranquility that the night brings. The nightingale is invoked as a symbol of the beauty and wonder of the night, and the lyrics encourage the bird to sing a song of an "everlasting night." The singer tries to convince themselves that "tomorrow's nowhere near and there's nothing to fear," as they cling to the feeling of safety and security offered by the night.
Overall, the song paints a picture of a person who is deeply in love and wants to hold onto the moment for as long as possible. The morning represents a harsh intrusion on this moment of peace and comfort, and the singer longs to delay its arrival for as long as possible.

I've always loved this record ever since it was released in 1969. It should have been a big hit but perhaps it was a little too gentle. A lovely record to relax to. Tom Springfield wrote some marvelous songs. Where is he now?

He will be 83 in July of 2017, so I guess he's just enjoying his retirement

Tom Springfield at his best. I eventually found the sheet music for this great song. What beautiful harmony from brother and sister! I cannot find any interview featuring the late Tom Springfield on the internet. I should have like to hear his thoughts on songwriting, Dusty, etc. The Seekers, especially, owed him a lot. He is gone, but certainly not forgotten by many admirers everywhere.
