As a teen, Hall put together a band called the Kentucky Travelers that performed before movies for a travelling theater. During a stint in the Army, Hall performed over the Armed Forces Radio Network and wrote comic songs about Army experiences. His early career included being a radio announcer at WRON, a local radio station in Ronceverte, West Virginia.
Hall's big break came in 1963 when singer Jimmy C. Newman recorded his song "DJ For a Day." In 1964 Hall moved to Nashville, TN, and within months had songs climbing the charts. Nicknamed "The Story Teller", he has written songs for dozens of country stars such as Johnny Cash, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, and Alan Jackson.
One of the most popular songs, "Harper Valley PTA", was originally recorded in 1968 by Jeannie C. Riley, sold over six million copies, and won both a Grammy and CMA award. The song later would inspire the motion picture and television program of the same name.
Hall's own recording career took off after that and he had such hits as "A Week in the Country Jail," "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine," "I Love," "Country Is", "The Year Clayton Delaney Died," "The Old Side of Town," and "I Like Beer." He was also noted for his children's songs, the most popular being "Sneaky Snake".
He also hosted the syndicated country music TV show Pop Goes the Country.
His son, Dean Hall, is also a singer and is member of the MuzikMafia.
A hard-rock adaptation of his song I love was featured in a series of successful television commercials for Coors beer.
Hall largely retired from writing new material in 1986 and from performing in 1994; his final public performance, which was also his first in several years, was in 2011.

I Love
Tom T. Hall Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Old pickup trucks,
Slow movin' trains - and rain.
I Love little country streams,
Sleep without dreams,
Sunday school in May - and hay.
And I love you too.
Pictures of my friends,
Birds of the world - and squirrels.
I Love - coffee in a cup,
Little fuzzy pups,
Bourbon in a glass- and grass i inserted this it was missing
Old TV shows- and snowdelete this line
And I love you too.
I Love honest open smiles,
Kisses from a child,
Tomatoes on the vine - and onions.
I Love winners when they cry,
Losers when they try,
Music when it's good - and life.
And I love you too.
The song “I Love” by Tom T. Hall is a simple yet heartfelt tribute to the beauty of life’s simple pleasures. The song takes the form of a list of things that the singer loves, which includes everything from baby ducks and pickup trucks to rain and coffee. However, it is clear that the true focus of the song is the last line of each verse, “And I love you too.” By sandwiching his declaration of love for another person between lists of things he loves, the singer emphasizes just how deeply he feels this love.
The first verse lists a collection of rural sights and experiences that the singer loves, including baby ducks, old pickup trucks, and slow moving trains. These images create a nostalgic and peaceful atmosphere, and the use of the word “love” to describe them emphasizes just how meaningful they are to the singer. Similarly, the second verse lists a series of images that are more personal to the singer, such as pictures of his friends and little fuzzy pups. By including these personal details alongside the broader rural imagery, the song creates a sense of intimacy and warmth.
The final verse takes a turn towards the emotional, listing things like an “honest open smile” and “kisses from a child” alongside the more concrete images from earlier in the song. By including both the physical and the emotional, the song suggests that love is a complex and multifaceted emotion that can be found in both big and small moments. Ultimately, the song emphasizes that love is about appreciating life’s simple pleasures as well as being open to the emotional connections that come from sharing these experiences with others.
