Tom T Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Looking everywhere
Hard times in the city
In a hard town by the sea
Hard times in the city
In a hard town by the sea
Ain't nowhere to run to
There ain't nothing here for free
And they don't know why
Cuz the city's dying
And they don't know why
Hard times in the city
In a hard town by the sea
In Tom T's song "Mix," the opening lines speak of a sense of searching and yearning. The singer is trying to find the ocean, looking everywhere in what appears to be a city. It's clear that they are struggling, and the repetition of "hard times in the city" adds to the sense of struggle and desperation. The phrase "hard town by the sea" creates an image of a desolate place, where even the ocean seems out of reach.
It's clear that the singer is trying to escape the difficulties of the city, but there is nowhere to run to. The phrase "there ain't nothing here for free" suggests that the singer is struggling to make a living, and they can't find any respite from their struggles. The repeated line about the city dying underscores the sense of hopelessness and despair.

Subbed because I somehow saw this.
Tom T Hall is among my absolute earliest musical memories. Of the few bright spots of my childhood were his songs.
His passing hit me like when Elvis passed.
Seeing him was a goal I was never able to realize, sadly.
I hope he's able to know how much his music meant to many folks.
RIP
