Hold On
Tom Waits Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They hung a sign up in our town
"If you live it up, you won't live it down"
So she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind
Said, "don't look back, just come on, Jim"

Oh, you got to hold on, hold on
You gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on

Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone's looking for someone to blame
When you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said, "baby, I still love you"
Sometimes there's nothin' left to do

Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on and take my hand
I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on

Well, God bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down
Then you burn your mansion to the ground
Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here
But when you're falling behind in this big blue world

Oh, you've got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on

Down by the Riverside motel
It's ten below and falling
By a ninety-nine cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Oh, your old hometown's so far away
But inside your head there's a record that's playing

A song called "Hold On", hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on

You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on

You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on

You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on

You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, baby
You gotta hold on, girl

You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on

Overall Meaning

Hold On by Tom Waits is a song about love and the hardships that come with it. The opening lines set the tone for the lyrics that follow. The verse talks about a sign that was put up in town warning people that their actions may have consequences that they won't be able to shake off. This leads to the woman in the song leaving her hometown and going to California. She is described in the song as having "charcoal eyes and Monroe hips," showing her as a beautiful and confident woman. The line "Just like a bullet leaves a gun" suggests that she left quickly and decisively. Jim is encouraged to join her by the woman saying "don't look back, just come on, Jim." This line could be interpreted in multiple ways; either the woman is saying that he should forget about his past and move on or she is saying that he doesn't need to worry because she is right there with him.

The second verse talks about the couple sharing space and how they are each other's responsibility. The woman says that when they share a bed, they share a name, meaning they are in this together. The line "You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops" suggests that their relationship isn't accepted by society. In the end, when there is "nothing left to do," the couple is encouraged to hold on. The third verse talks about how the woman is missed and how the man is struggling without her. He is reminded of their song, "Hold On," and how it gives him comfort in such a difficult time. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the idea that they need to hold on to one another to make it through.

I love singing Tom Wait’s songs- not everyone knows these beautiful lyrics and I want to sing them as clearly as possible. But God bless Tom - when he dies, he will be St. Tom- of the broken, homeless, the lost and he will guide us all on a path to healing- after shooting us down the rabbit hole out of a cannon first of course though

@Ad-Ac

Songs like this are reason to live. Genius level artistry

@thatonegearguy

This got me through a very dark time in my life when I was getting out of the service years ago. I lost my closet friend in nam as soon as we got over there.. Blown in half in my arms. Still see his face and hear his last words. I worked a number of years until Desert Storm. After all that even with the wife around, I didn't want to live, but I held on..

God Bless you

Thank you for your service Sir. God bless you.

@@ronaldnoble9694Time to stop pretending that being emotionally brutalized and physically destroyed for the utterly superficial goals of nations isn't "service" but a sentence.
