Song composer(s): Tomas Ledin

Final Position: 10
Total Points: 47
The Hague was once more the host city for the song contest after both Israel and the United Kingdom declined to be hosts. Because of the fact that the 1979 winner, Israel, did not have the means of hosting the song contest again, the UK broadcaster BBC was asked if they would be willing to organise the event. They declined, so the Netherlands became the organiser despite the fact that there was not enough time left and Dutch TV NOS had to re-use most of the stage from 1976 when they hosted the contest last. NOS picked April 19th as the date for the song contest, but as this was the Holocaust Memorial Day in Israel, the defending champion decided not to participate which marked the only time when the winner of one Eurovision Song Contest didn't participate in the next.
For the first time in the history of the song contest, an African country - Morocco - participated with Samira, a star in all of the Arabian countries, but when her entry Bitakat Hob ended up at 18th position with just 7 points altogether, Moroccan TV decided that the country should not participate in the contest again. Turkey returned to the contest after one year's absence and Monaco stayed home which meant that the total amount of participating countries amounted to 19 - just as in 1979. Each country brought along a presenter of its own choice along in order to introduce the song in their native language.
The Irish Johnny Logan who would later be called "Mr. Eurovision" secured Ireland's second victory. The Australian-born singer who only became an Irish citizen after he sang for Ireland in the 1980 contest, would later return and win the contest again in 1987. His 1980 victory brought him a number one hit in the UK and numerous television appearances across Europe. What's another year received seven times the maximum of 12 point votes, ending up with 143 points in total.

Så långt ögat kan nå
Inte en droppe regn
På flera dar
Med en glass i min mun
Å i sandaler av plast
Går jag i solen
Och tänker på dig
Seglar förbi
Sommaren är kort
De mesta regnar bort
Men nu är den här
Så ta för dig
Solen skiner idag
Hösten kommer snart
De går med vindens fart
Så lyssna på mig
Solen skiner
Kanske bara idag
Vattnet är varmt
Och luften står still
Jag sitter i skuggan
Läser gårdagens blad
Snart är det dags
För ett hopp i de blå
Få bort sanden mellan tårna
Å svalka min kropp
Sommaren är kort
De mesta regnar bort
Men nu är den här
Så ta för dig
Solen skiner idag
Hösten kommer snart
De går med vindens fart
Så lyssna på mig
Solen skiner
Kanske bara idag
Nananana
Nanana
Nanana
Nanana
Nanana
Sommaren är kort
Det mesta regnar bort
Men nu är den här
Solen skiner
Kanske bara idag
In Tomas Ledin's song "Sommaren är kort" (which translates to "Summer is Short"), the singer reflects on the fleeting nature of summer and the importance of enjoying it while it lasts. The song describes a perfect summer day without a cloud in the sky or a drop of rain in sight. The singer enjoys a cold ice cream and walks on the beach in plastic sandals while thinking of a loved one. The song then emphasizes the transience of summertime and the importance of seizing the moment before autumn comes and the season ends. The lyrics conclude on a hopeful note, reminding listeners that while summer is short, we can still enjoy the sunny days while they last.
Overall, the song is about embracing the present moment and enjoying life's simple pleasures. It encourages listeners to savor the brief beauty of summer and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Summer is short
There's not a cloud,
As far as the eye can see
There's not a rain drop
For several days
But with ice cream in my mouth
And plastic sandals
I go into the sun
And think of you
Light-blue days
Sail by
Summer is short
Most of it rains away
But now it's here
So enjoy yourself
The sun is shining today
Fall is coming soon
It leaves with the speed of the wind
So listen to me
The sun is shining
Maybe just for today
The water is warm
And the air stands still
I sit in the shade
And read yesterday's paper
Soon it's time
For a jump in the blue
To wash the sand off from between my toes
And cool down my body
Summer is short
Most of it rains away
But now it's here
So enjoy yourself
The sun is shining today
Fall is coming soon
It leaves with the speed of the wind
So listen to me
