It’s a chalk round, they don’t explode. The casing probably had a crack in it that’s why it it did that. Carry some for long enough and you will have that chalk everywhere. Also 40mm have to rotate a certain number of times before it arms. Near impossible to detonate in the air that close. No one here was in any danger.

Definitely was the trainees fault one of the first things we’re taught when handling our weapons is to never have your hand on the trigger unless you’re ready to fire, she aimed the gun with her finger on the trigger and not fully extended along the side, surprised they handled it the way they did though when I went through basic which was about a year ago we had a negligent discharge and the drill sergeant’s lost their shit, for good reasons of course

You can't make that determination. The video does not demonstrate that the shooter is not obeying the firing line commands. The shooter has a safety at the firing position, the safety is observing the shooter. The shooter has loaded the weapon, placed the weapon on fire, and is observing the target. The shooter then squeezes the trigger and places the weapon on safe while obeying the firing line commands. And, yes, technically, it's not a weapon malfunction, it's an ammunition malfunction. But, as the video stands, it is not a negligent discharge.@@schwierdo8838

For the record, the seargents reaction is because the launcher fired the grenade much slower than it should have, and it landed right in front of her. Grenade launchers shoot much further than that, typically further than someone could throw. She didn't do anything wrong. If she had fired the launcher without being instructed too, the reactions would've been a lot angrier and she probably wouldnt be smiling after the seargent told her to put it down.

@@rowanweaver3241you’re not correct. Chalk rounds do that on occasion. The mass behind the chalk round burst through a poorly manufactured nosecone assembly. There was no danger to anyone. The guy freaking out was over reacting. What’s more grenade rounds have a fuse that activates based on the spin of the projectile and doesn’t activate till the round is a safe distance from the shooter. Chalk round are easily damaged and this happens sometimes

They actually detonate too late because whilst being made by the lowest bidder they err on the side of safety and make the fuses too stiff essentially. A lot of the comments suggest the shooter did something wrong or that she’s incompetent when in actuality she did nothing wrong and even had the presence of mind to engage the safety whilst the Drill was gettin all excited. When I was in the corps my Gunnery Sergeant was in rotation to throw grenades and it was a live fire exercise and he ended up getting a pretty bad shrapnel wound to his right eye . @@anastasiabryant2571 Well, not all NCOs are the same. Some are kinder some are meaner. The thing is, soldiers need to recognize all sorts of threats when it happens on the field. Regardless if it's training or not, the soldier's gonna get yelled at. For this instance, let's say a threat comes along for the training exercise. Failure to resolve this threat is an obvious no-no. Yelling at the soldier can give them a sense of danger and recognizes the threat more clearly. Being all soft around them will give off the implication that the threat can be seen as minor. For example, the firearm malfunctioned and as it is an M320 grenade launcher, could explode in your face. If you don't yell at the soldier, which the drill sergeant didn't the soldier might think that this is something that you don't really take seriously. However, the mindset changes if you yell at them. The pressure from the drill sergeant can help make the soldier recognize what the problem is. They don't have to be logical about the situation, they just need to know what to properly without slacking off and brushing away the problem.

These Cheeto puff rounds as we called them in the Marine corps infantry do this sometimes. It already had some damage to the ceramic so the force on the round from being shot couldn’t handle it and poof. They just over exaggerated. During training if this happens we don’t panic and act surprised we just clear and observe the chamber load a new round and continue to kill are target. This clearly shows inexperience on the part of the person yelling WTF in the background, the NCO (I’m assuming) conducting the training, and the young Soldier. This type of thing will lead to that young Soldier becoming poorly trained and more risk averse in the future. She will then treat her Soldiers like the NCO in this video.

We need more hard charging Leaders who understand the equipment, what to do when they malfunction, walk the Soldiers through what to do before they fire it, and then have the Soldiers correct it on the spot.

It’s almost like we write manuals about these kinds of things.

A live grenade wouldn't have armed until traveling 7 to 10 meters (combat round) or 20 to 40 meters (training HE rounds)
The chalk rounds used here don't use explosives to creat their cloud of smoke, just impact against something....

for those who wondering or speaking too how calm the instructor is being, its for two reasons. one the round used is a chalk round, not a grenadine round. so its not dangerous that its jammed or malfunctioning, however as its a training tool meant to simulate a grenade round he still has her treat it as such. the other reason hes calm is the same reason we are used to instructors being the opposite. he needs her to make a calm rational decision its really him doing so for her where she doesn't know what to do. so he's calm as where yelling is to acclimate soldiers to performing under stress. its pretty common for instructors to take a calmer and more forgiving demeanor when recruits are handling live firearms.... not that they wont lose their shit if you fuck up bad enough.

Psh, the day we practiced throwing dummy grenades we were to treat them as if they were real and some dumbass literally threw it straight to the ground next to about 20 people and I immediately picked it up and threw it away from them as they all stared at it like idiots. That bitch was hot when I grabbed it but I was a very happy camper watching everyone get screamed at by the DS saying all of them would've died if it was real because they stood around like idiots staring at it. It popped not even 2 seconds after I threw it and DS told them there would've been only 1 casualty vs 20 if it was real. 1 vs 20 would be a big number to lose anywhere. It looked like it was something straight out of a movie.

Two things, the chalks rounds sometimes come broken from the box causing them to explode out the barrel and m320s come with a muzzle cap… so if you fire it with the muzzle cap on like my unit did 3 separate times… it makes for a bad day at the range because now you have to police call for 3 hours til you find the muzzle caps
