Everything Happens To Me
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Black cats creep across my path
Until I'm almost mad
I must have roused the Devil's wrath
'Cause all my luck is bad
I make a date for golf
And you can bet your life it rains
I try to give a party
But the guy upstairs complains
I guess I'll go thru life
Just catchin' colds and missin' trains
Everything happens to me

I never miss a thing,
I've had the measles and the mumps
And every time I play an ace
My partner always trumps
I guess I'm just a fool
Who never looks before he jumps
Everything happens to me

At first my heart thought
You could break this jinx for me
That love would turn
The trick to end despair
But now I just can't fool
This head that thinks for me
So I've mortgaged
All my castles in the air

I've telegraphed and phoned
Sent an Air Mail Special, too
You answer was goodbye
There was even postage due
I fell in love just once
And then it had to be with you
Everything happens to me

I've never drawn a sweepstake
Or a bank night at a show
I thought perhaps this time
I'd won but Lady Luck said no
And though it breaks my heart
I'm not surprised to see you go
Everything happens to me

Everything happens to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra's song "Everything Happens to Me" tell the story of a person whose luck seems to be continuously bad. The opening lines describe the feeling of being cursed or haunted by bad luck as the singer says that black cats always cross their path, and their luck is constantly bad. The chorus speaks to the theme of the song as the singer muses that no matter what they do, they always seem to encounter obstacles and challenges that prevent success. They can't even catch a break in love, as the person that they fell in love with ended up leaving them.

The second verse underscores the themes of the song as the singer describes their life in more detail, noting that they've never won anything and that even when they do well playing card games, their partners always trump their aces. The chorus repeats, reinforcing the idea that this person just can't seem to catch a break. The bridge of the song has the singer reminiscing about a time when they thought that finding love would change their luck, but now they've given up on that idea and have lost hope.

Overall, the song speaks to a universal feeling of bad luck and the sense that everything is going wrong in one's life. The lyrics are poignant and relatable, and they are amplified by the beautiful and haunting melody that Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra performs.

A few years before Hollywood beckoned, and over a decade prior to snagging the coveted gold statuette, Young Blue Eyes proved himself an extremely talented actor: The by all accounts supremely confident and cocky Sinatra was capable of portraying vulnerability and sensitivity as no other male vocalist could. ... Matt Dennis got his gig writing for the Dorsey band through his friendship with Jo Stafford: The Pied Pipers' lead vocalist recommended her old pal from her early days in LA to her boss and the bandleader made composer Dennis and lyricist Tom Adair staff writers for the aggregation. In addition to this great one, the team was responsible for "Let's Get Away From It All," "Little Man With A Candy Cigar," "The Night We Called It A Day," "Violets For Your Furs," and "Will You Still Be Mine" -- all of which the TD orch. got first crack at.
