Honeysuckle Rose
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every honey bee fills with jealousy,
When they see you out with me.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

When you're passin' by flowers droop and sigh,
And I know the reason why.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Don't buy sugar,
You just have to touch my cup.
You're my sugar.
It's sweeter when you stir it up.

When I'm taking sips from your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Don't buy sugar,
You just have to touch my cup.
You're my sugar.
It's sweeter when you stir it up.

When I'm taking sips from your tasty lips
Seems the honey fairly drips.

Goodness knows
You're my honeysuckle rose

Trombonology Erstwhile

One of my all-time favorite Dorsey Brothers records, as well as Miller arrangements. GM's use of the trombone section, both in the foreground and behind the various soloists, is ingenious. Wonderful record!

Dan VanLandingham

I've read where he and Tommy Dorsey wanted an identifiable sound. They felt that if they pitched the band in Bing Crosby's range, they'd get it.That was when Miller came up with the idea of one alto, two tenors, three trombones and one trumpet.I don't recall that idea showing up again until Jimmy Zito put together a band that had his trumpet, four or five reeds and four or five trombones and four rhythm. He cut a number of sides for the California based "Coast" label in 1948.There is nothing in terms of the history of that label.I've seen 45s on Coast by Rafael Mendez.

Adam Wright

@Dan VanLandingham Pitched the band in Bing Crosby's range, what does that mean (I am not musical, but i love bing and this era)? incidentally, do you know who is singing the vocal on this? it is not often bing gets credited with influencing the music as opposed to other vocalists.

@Adam Wright I think he meant Irish tenor pitch!

Thank you! Uncle Kappy (Delmer) went on to form Glenn Miller's band. Retired to Lubbock, Texas about 1954. He died around 1998.
