In The Blue Of Evening
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the blue of evening
When you appear close to me, dear one
There in that dusk we'll share a dream reverie
In the blue of evening
While crickets call and stars are falling
There β€˜neath the midnight sky you'll come to me

In the shadows of the night we'll stand
I'll touch your heart and then
Softly as your lovely eyes entreat
Our lips will meet again

In the blue of evening
Night winds above whisper "I love you"

Then we will find romance
In the blue of evening

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tommy Dorsey's "In The Blue Of Evening" depict the peaceful yet romantic atmosphere of an evening shared between two lovers. As the dusk sets in and the stars start to fall, the two are lost in a dream reverie, basking in each other's company. The crickets call in the background as they stand together, under the midnight sky, eagerly awaiting each other's touch. As they stand in the shadows of the night, the two make a vow to meet again and share their love for one another.

The lyrics beautifully portray the emotions that come with falling in love, the feeling of being lost in someone's eyes, the comfort of shared intimacy, and the anticipation of the next meeting. The blue of the evening symbolizes the calming and serene nature of the moment while the night winds whispering "I love you" accentuates the feeling of being deeply in love. The lyrics of the song, while simple in nature, manage to capture the beauty of a romantic experience that is unexplainable.

Reading the book β€˜countdown 1945’ and this song was messaged in a chapter that mentioned a young woman working in the production of the atom bomb- remembered that this song was playing when she first met her boyfriend who was a soldier during the battle of the bulge. Wanted to experience why they remembered music. Interesting. Big band music was wonderful for sure.

Baby making music. Though with most of the good ones off to war, there weren't many guys around to make babies with. That would all change in about three years.
