Josephine
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There never was a gal I could love, like I love my Josephine
She's a flirt, she's a scamp, she's the vampiest vamp I've ever seen
It seems to me she's always flirting with the fellows passing by
But when I say she winks, then she tells me she thinks
There's a cinder in her eye
I believe it would be better if I'd leave her and forget
Everybody says it would be wise
But each time that I go out to dance with somebody else
I find myself dancing with tears in my eyes
For there's nobody quite so nice who can be quite so mean
As my gal, what a gal, Josephine

There never was a gal I could love, like I love my Josephine
She's a flirt, she's a scamp, she's the vampiest vamp I've ever seen
It seems to me she's always flirting with the fellows passing by
But when I say she winks, then she tells me she thinks
There's a cinder in her eye
I believe it would be better if I'd leave her and forget
Everybody says it would be wise
But each time that I go out to dance with somebody else
I find myself dancing with tears in my eyes

For there's nobody quite so nice who can be quite so mean
As my gal, what a gal, Josephine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra's song "Josephine" tell the story of a man deeply in love with a woman named Josephine, despite her flirtatious and manipulative ways. The song opens with the declaration that there has never been a woman he could love as much as Josephine. The singer describes her as a flirt, a scamp, and the "vampiest vamp" he's ever seen, suggesting that her beauty and charm are a major part of his attraction to her.

Throughout the song, the singer expresses frustration with Josephine's flirtatious behavior, describing her as constantly flirting with other men, but insisting that when he confronts her, she always has a "cinder in her eye." Despite the opinions of those around him that he should leave Josephine and move on, the singer can't seem to let go of his love for her. He finds himself dancing with tears in his eyes whenever he tries to dance with anyone else, and concludes that there is "nobody quite so nice who can be quite so mean" as Josephine.

I like co-composer Wayne King's take all right, but I much prefer this lightly swinging ode to "the vampiest vamp" by Tommy's band-within-a-band, The Clambake Seven. TD didn't often use his Solo-Tone mute, so frequently employed in full band ballad performances, with the C7, but I guess he thought it fit the mood here -- and I agree. Jack's vocal ,with his trademark unassuming quality, is sweet, and the rhythm section's Howard Smith and Carmen Mastren are discreetly -- and discretely -- terrific.

Very Nice tune. Not sure Jack is quite up to the tune's intricate melody.
