My Kinda Love
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My kinda love, your kinda love
Keeps me believing, although you're deceiving
My kinda love, one way to paradise

My kinda lips, your kinda lips
When love comes stealing, encourage that feeling
My kinda love, one way to paradise
Although you're happy today
You may be gone tomorrow
Love comes but once, don't be a dunce
When you need it, steal it, beg or borrow

I'm fond of you, you're fond of me
Tell me you love me and hug me and squeeze me
My kinda love, one way to paradise

Although you're happy today
You may be gone tomorrow
Love comes but once, don't be a dunce
When you need it, beg or steal or borrow

I'm fond of you, you're fond of me

Tell me you love me and hug me and squeeze me
My kinda love, one way to paradise

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tommy Dorsey's song My Kinda Love portray a tumultuous and tumultuous relationship. The singer is aware that their lover may be deceitful, but nevertheless holds onto the hope that their love can lead them to a kind of paradise. The lyrics speak to the idea that a love that is passionate, even if it is not entirely healthy, is better than no love at all.

The verses are filled with contradictions. The singer expresses both their own belief in the relationship as well as their doubts - they acknowledge that the love may be one-sided, but still hold onto the possibility of paradise. They describe their lover's lips as "stealing" their love, yet encourage these feelings. There is a sense of desperation and urgency present throughout the song, with the repeated refrain of "when you need it, steal it, beg or borrow". The singer knows that love can be fleeting, but wants to hold onto it as tightly as possible.

Overall, My Kinda Love is a complex and bittersweet exploration of a relationship. The lyrics capture the highs and lows of falling in love, and the importance of holding onto it even when it may not be entirely healthy.

One of my all time favorite recordings... and the arrangement is absolutely astonishing, there is so damn much going on here.

+tuxguys You are right, however I was referring to the dyed in the wool rock fans, who seem almost as shallow as the junk they seem to worship. As the great British actor Sir Cedric Hardwicke said (which seems to fit this situation) I'm paraphrasing here, "If you're going to perform rubbish, yu might as well get paid for it"

Actually, the most talented and intelligent Rockers won't, because they know that there was life and music before Chuck Berry...
Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, and even John Mayer come to mind.

+tuxguys Yes ! I'm tempted to say that when it comes to complexity of arrangement and the sheer musicality, the old timers still can;'t be beat (now I'll bet the rockers will take a few pot-shots at this)

totally agree   ,

John Murphy

A lot of great stuff here. The Dorsey Brothers and Glenn Miller, who wrote the arrangements for the band. I think Arthur Schutt is on the piano. Bing Crosby is superb here. This is a 1929 recording, one of three that Bing made with the Dorsey Brothers.

Kirk Barkley

Well, this is actually a 1929 recording - and a goodie it is, too!
