There Are Such Things
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A heart that's true
There are such things
A dream for two
There are such things
Someone to whisper darling
You're my guiding star
Not caring what you own
But just what you are

A peaceful sky
There are such things
A rainbow high
Where heaven sings
So have a little faith
And trust in what tomorrow brings
You'll reach a star
Because there are such things

So have a little faith
And trust in what tomorrow brings

You'll reach a star
Because there are such things

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tommy Dorsey's song There Are Such Things are about finding love and hope in life. The first stanza talks about a genuine and sincere heart, which is a rarity, but it does exist. The second lines talk about having a dream with someone special, and it too can come true. The third line speaks of the desire for someone to whisper sweet nothings to you and make you feel like you're the most important person in the world. The following line suggests that it's not about having worldly possessions, but about who a person truly is.

The following stanza talks about how there are still peaceful and beautiful things in this world - clear skies and rainbows. The singer encourages the listener to have faith and trust in tomorrow, to believe that good things will come to pass. And if you do, you will "reach a star", you will achieve great things and wonderful dreams. The final line, "because there are such things" brings the song full circle, back to the title - that good things do exist in life, and we should never give up hope.

Overall, these lyrics are an encouragement to keep staying positive in life, keep believing and keep dreaming, because there are good things to come someday.

This song was one my Daddy sang along with during his final few months. I cherish the videos I have of him singing this. ❤️🎶❤️

"A peaceful sky...there are such things." What a profound lyric in the middle of the war 💖

@Trombonology

A deserving Number One! Though I've never been as enthusiastic in general about the Dorsey band with strings as without, I do adore this side and feel that the lush violin sound and the harp intro make an attractive addition. Frank and the Pipers, though, are of course the focal point. I've always loved that line, "Someone to whisper, 'Darling, you're my guiding star'/Not caring what you own, but just what you are" -- a beautiful thought!

Seems as though the strings lasted only about two years with TD's band. Were they only on radio broadcasts and studio recordings or did they travel with the regular band?

@Trombonology

@harold westbrook They went on the road with the band! Given that their tenure coincided with WWII and the travel restrictions it imposed, it must have been a real headache to ensure that a band of those gargantuan proportions got from one gig to the next!

@josephfollo7530

@harold westbrook The strings were with TD full time until he let them go due to cost-cutting measures. Nelson Riddle, who was playing trombone and arranging for TD at the time loved writing for strings until Tommy told him to cool it - they weren't going to be around for much longer. You can see the strings in action in DuBarry Was a Lady. [It's funny to see them play during the song Well, Git It!, a real killer-diller (to use the jargon of the day).]

Oh such a beautiful moment..
