How Can I Keep From Singing
Toni Gibson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Above earth's lamentation,
I hear the sweet, tho' far-off hymn
That hails a new creation;
Thro' all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul—
How can I keep from singing?
The Lord my Saviour liveth;
What tho' the darkness gather round?
Songs in the night he giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smooths,
Since first I learned to love it,
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing;
All things are mine since I am his—
How can I keep from singing?
The lyrics to Toni Gibson's song, How Can I Keep from Singing, convey a sentiment of unbridled joy and gratitude, despite the trials and tribulations of life. The opening line, "My life flows on in endless song," implies a continuous and unceasing stream of melody, one that rises "above earth's lamentation" – or, in other words, the noise and chaos of the world. The singer goes on to describe a "sweet, tho' far-off hymn" that heralds the dawn of a new creation – a world of peace, love, and harmony. This melody, despite the "tumult and the strife" of everyday life, finds an echo in the singer's soul, prompting her to ask, "How can I keep from singing?"
The answer, according to the singer, lies in her deep and abiding faith in God. She acknowledges that life is not always easy – "What tho' my joys and comforts die? / The Lord my Saviour liveth; / What tho' the darkness gather round? / Songs in the night he giveth" – but is comforted by the knowledge that nothing can shake her "inmost calm" as long as she clings to her faith. She is sustained by the peace of Christ, which "makes fresh [her] heart" and serves as a "fountain ever springing." In short, the singer finds solace and joy in her relationship with God, and this is what prompts her to keep singing.
In conclusion, Toni Gibson's song, How Can I Keep from Singing, is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving, one that celebrates the unshakeable joy and peace that comes from a deep faith in God. The lyrics are a testament to the singer's unbridled optimism and indomitable spirit, the kind that refuses to be beaten down by the trials and tribulations of life. In a world that often seems dark and chaotic, the song reminds us that there is hope, there is light, and there is always a reason to keep singing.
