Soldier's Daughter
Tonic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the way he looks at you
That says to me
This isn't over
From the outside looking in
You see there's nothing sacred here
Nothing sacred
You can bend
But you can't break
For the reasons out of our control
You try to make it roll
Like a dice away
But you say that you're all empowered here
This is obviously not clear enough
To meYou can bend
But you can't break
Hey little girl keep dancing
Hey little girl keep dancing alone
'Cause there's not enough time in your day
To keep you here
The soldier's daughter
Did your daddy
Did your daddy hurt you
Did he make you feel bad
Did he poison your views
With the water he was raised on
Oh you father's son says hang on
Hang on
Hey little girl
Keep dancing
Hay little girl
Keep dancing alone
'Cause there's not enough time in your life
To stay here
So over the hills he'd climb
Just to see her there in time
Just to watch the sun shine through her dress

The sweet soldier's daughter

Overall Meaning

The song "Soldier's Daughter" by Tonic is a beautiful yet emotional ballad about a young girl who is trying to overcome the pain and hurt caused by her father. The song starts off with the singer discussing the way the girl's lover is looking at her and how he feels that things are not yet over between them. The chorus of the song is a repetition of the lines "Hey little girl keep dancing / Hey little girl keep dancing alone" emphasizing the notion of independence, strength, and resilience. The song then moves on to talk about how the girl's father may have hurt her and made her feel bad, poisoning her views with the water he was raised on. The singer then speaks about how the girl's lover is there to remind her to keep moving and to keep dancing alone when there's not enough time in her day to stay.

Way back when Lemon Parade was big, I rescued a wee beagle from a breeding farm. She was full of cancer and only had a few months of freedom and life. She *loved* this song so much and would dance every time I played it. This always makes me sad but happy too. This song gave her such joy. Thank you.

I graduated HS in 99, and I still come back to listen to these guys. Brings back memories from ski trips, etc. What a great band.

@PotzyMccoy

One of the most underrated bands of all time. I have been listening to them for over 15 years. No matter how specific their lyrics get, they leave room for me to interpret them for myself and enjoy them as if they were written for me.

@treyburke3718

@sargeinamerica

Their music has really held up over all these years. I was deployed several times to Afghanistan and most of us had our own soundtracks to get you through the long nights away from our loved ones. but no one ever really talked about it it was just hard enough worrying about what tomorrow was going to bring. But hey that’s how you get through the SUCK!!

@Forever_Thatter

Even their bad songs are good (re: Thick).
