Born 1943, Yorkshire, UK, Christie started his musical life in 1960 in a duo called the Grant Brothers, and until 1969 he simply fronted bands. In 1969 he signed up with MCA Records. Hits such as Amarillo and I Did What I Did for Maria followed.
Christie sold over 10 million records in the 70s. The 80s saw a slowdown due to changing musical taste, however he was awarded Die Golden Europa by German radio for superb showmanship.
The 90s led to more hits such as the song Sweet September and the Jarvis Cocker song Walk like a Panther.
Peter Kay brought Christie to a whole new generation of youth with the song (Is This the Way To) Amarillo and Avenues and Alleyways.
Christie is still going strong and he got into the football spirit with (Is This the Way To) The World Cup.
Down in Mexico
Tony Christie Lyrics

Across the border into Mexico
I saw a young girl sing in the Plaza,
Songs I don't know
Her lovely body swayed in the moon light
I asked her name
That night my life changed
I'll never be the same.
Down in Mexico
When I kissed my pretty Rosita
I knew that I would fall in love
Down in Mexico
When I danced with my Senorita
I felt I touched the rainbow high above
I had to wait so long to find the real thing
Sometimes I thought that love had passed me be
But now I met my pretty Rosita
I feel so high
I thought I locked away my emotions
She found a key
I know that she is the only one for me
Down in Mexico
When I kissed my pretty Rosita
I knew that I would fall in love
Down in Mexico
When I danced with my Senorita
I felt I touched the rainbow high above
We're gonna sail it was a Silver Sea
Summer breezes in our hair
Well, Darling I don't care if she's there
I love Rosita (I love Rosita)
I love my Rosita (I love my Rosita)
Down in Mexico
When I kissed my pretty Rosita
I knew that I would fall in love
Down in Mexico
When I danced with my Senorita
I felt I touched the rainbow high above
My love Rosita!
The song Down in Mexico by Tony Christie is a narrative about the singer's journey to Mexico, where he falls in love. The first verse describes his travels from Arizona to Mexico and his discovery of a young girl singing in the plaza. He is intrigued by her and asks for her name. The chorus, "Down in Mexico, when I kissed my pretty Rosita, I knew that I would fall in love," reflects the moment when the singer falls in love with Rosita. The second verse further explains his feelings for Rosita, and how he thought that love might have passed him by before meeting her. The bridge of the song is a declaration of love for Rosita, and how he is willing to go through any obstacle to be with her.
The lyrics of Down in Mexico are romantic and descriptive of the emotions involved in falling in love. The setting of the plaza in Mexico, with music and moonlight, creates an ambiance of magic and wonder, which is captured perfectly in the lyrics. The symbol of rainbow in the chorus is a visual representation of the beauty and joy that love brings into one's life. The metaphor of "locking away emotions" and "finding a key" shows how Rosita has unlocked the singer's heart and allowed him to love again.
