Born 1943, Yorkshire, UK, Christie started his musical life in 1960 in a duo called the Grant Brothers, and until 1969 he simply fronted bands. In 1969 he signed up with MCA Records. Hits such as Amarillo and I Did What I Did for Maria followed.
Christie sold over 10 million records in the 70s. The 80s saw a slowdown due to changing musical taste, however he was awarded Die Golden Europa by German radio for superb showmanship.
The 90s led to more hits such as the song Sweet September and the Jarvis Cocker song Walk like a Panther.
Peter Kay brought Christie to a whole new generation of youth with the song (Is This the Way To) Amarillo and Avenues and Alleyways.
Christie is still going strong and he got into the football spirit with (Is This the Way To) The World Cup.

Hip hip
Hip hip
Hip hip
When you're on a holiday
You can't find the words to say
All the things that come to you
On an island in the sun
We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my brain
Hip hip
Hip hip
When you're on a golden sea
You don't need no memory
Just a place to call your own
As we drift into the zone
On an island in the sun
We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my brain
We'll run away together
We'll spend some time forever
We'll never feel bad anymore
Hip hip
Hip hip
Hip hip
On an island in the sun
We'll be playing and having fun
And it makes me feel so fine
I can't control my brain
We'll run away together
We'll spend some time forever
We'll never feel bad any more
Heh heh
We'll never feel bad anymore
(hip hip)
(hip hip)
No no
(heh heh)
(Hip hip)
We'll never feel bad anymore
No no
The lyrics of the song 'Island In The Sun' by Tony Christie is a song that talks about the feeling of euphoria, fun, and relaxation that comes with going on a vacation to a tropical island. The first verse talks about how one may not be able to find the right words to express the emotions that come from being in such an environment and how the singer wants to experience those same feelings. The second verse emphasizes how being on a golden sea is all that one needs to create new memories, and the pre-chorus builds up to the chorus, where the singer emphasizes that being on the island brings a particular feeling that is impossible to control.
The chorus of the song is catchy and emphasizes the joy and excitement that comes with being on an island in the sun. The repetition of the phrase 'hip hip' in between the chorus and the verse adds to the upbeat tempo of the song. The bridge section provides a sense of exclusivity as the singer talks about running away from everyone else and spending eternity on the island. The song ends with the repeated phrases of 'hip hip' and 'heh heh,' depicting an atmosphere of joy and excitement.
