Born 1943, Yorkshire, UK, Christie started his musical life in 1960 in a duo called the Grant Brothers, and until 1969 he simply fronted bands. In 1969 he signed up with MCA Records. Hits such as Amarillo and I Did What I Did for Maria followed.
Christie sold over 10 million records in the 70s. The 80s saw a slowdown due to changing musical taste, however he was awarded Die Golden Europa by German radio for superb showmanship.
The 90s led to more hits such as the song Sweet September and the Jarvis Cocker song Walk like a Panther.
Peter Kay brought Christie to a whole new generation of youth with the song (Is This the Way To) Amarillo and Avenues and Alleyways.
Christie is still going strong and he got into the football spirit with (Is This the Way To) The World Cup.
So Deep Is The Night
Tony Christie Lyrics

No Moon tonight
No friendly star
To guide me with it's light
Be still my heart
Silent lest my love should be returning
From the world, far apart
So deep is the night
O, lonely night
On broken wings
My heart has taken flight
And left a dream
In my dream our lips are blending
Will my dream be never ending
Will your memory haunt me 'til I die
Alone am I, deep into the night
Waiting for the light
Alone am I, I wonder why
I wonder why.
Tony Christie's song "So Deep Is The Night" is a lamentation of love lost and loneliness. The lyrics paint a picture of a solitary figure wandering the night without any guiding light. The opening lines, "So deep is the night, no moon tonight, no friendly star to guide me with its light," sets a melancholic tone. The singer implores his own heart to be still, fearing that it may give way to hope that his love may yet return.
The second stanza offers a glimpse into the singer's shattered dreams. His heart, broken and unmoored, has taken flight, leaving only a dream behind. Yet, even in dreams, the memory of his lost love is inescapable. The haunting question, "Will your memory haunt me 'til I die?" is a testament to the all-consuming power of heartbreak.
The final two lines of the song, "Alone am I, I wonder why, I wonder why," capture the essence of the singer's despair. He is left alone, in the dark of night, questioning the very reasons behind his loneliness.
Overall, "So Deep Is The Night" is a poignant ode to the pain of lost love and the haunting power of memory.

Wow!
