Slip Away
Tony Iommi/Glenn Hughes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My brain is automatic
My body my machine
I don't listen to the static
'Cause I'm somewhere in between
It's time to face the music
It's time to make a plan
You know I'm telepathic
I'm a hoochie coochie man
I can't let go
No I just can't let it go
It don't bother me no more
So let me introduce myself
In case you didn't know
That one thing comes before my health
This child has gotta grow
Don't let it slip
Don't let it slip away
Don't let it slip
Don't let it slip away
I'm not tryin' to be reckless
But I am a little vain
I have a kinda weakness
I'm addicted to the pain
Now you can call me papa
Or you can call me 'G'
And I will go the distance
I know you will agree
Can't find a cure
I can't find a cure
It don't bother me no more
So let me introduce myself
In case you didn't know

That one thing comes before my health
This is gonna grow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tony Iommi/Glenn Hughes's song Slip Away are about a person who is struggling to let go of something that they have become addicted to. The opening lines "My brain is automatic, My body my machine, I don't listen to the static, 'Cause I'm somewhere in between" suggest that the person is in a state of automaticity and they are not fully present. They are living somewhere in between the past and the future and the "static" represents the distractions of life that they do not pay attention to.

The lyrics then go on to talk about the need to face the music and make a plan. The person acknowledges that they are telepathic and a "hoochie coochie man" which means they are in tune with their own emotions and feelings. The chorus "I can't let go, No I just can't let it go, It don't bother me no more" is a reflection of the person's struggle to let go of what they have become addicted to.

The second verse talks about the person's vanity and weakness as they are addicted to pain. The lines "Now you can call me papa, Or you can call me 'G', And I will go the distance, I know you will agree" suggest that the person is willing to do whatever it takes to continue their addiction. The chorus "Don't let it slip, Don't let it slip away, I'm not tryin' to be reckless, But I am a little vain" is a plea from the person to not let their addiction slip away.

Overall, the song is a reflection of the struggle that many people face when it comes to addiction. It is important to face the music and make a plan to overcome the addiction before it slips away.

ronforeman

I desperately wish

1) The label would re-release "Fused" as a "Special Edition" and include ALL the bonus tracks. They're all easily as good, if not arguably BETTER in some cases, than the ones one that made the original album.
2) That Tony could be persuaded to come out of well-deserved retirement to join with Glenn Hughes and Kenny Aronoff and do a HEADLINING TOUR behind this album. They could also do material off "The 1996 DEP Sessions." The interest would be HUGE!
3) A planned tour would give these guys an excuse to get back into the studio for a week and crank out one more album. I know they have it in them. Then I could die a happy man, my every dream fulfilled!
