The Gift
Tony Joe White Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was sitting in a grave yard and I
didnt know
And I walk in the dark and a bottle of wine
Thinking there the moon hang in the sky.
Cut your rope.
Have a little tune going through my ear
Then I started to cry
. in heaven on my heart
Too much on my mind.
I was staring out of the shadows
When I dont . a few
Heard the whisper in the .
All around you.

Then it get towels in my hand everybodys thinking so
Can slip the release and all the pieces
but they knew it was time to go
They left me there.
The cold gray dawn.
I feel like a man walking in the sleep
. to my car.
But now I have a shut gun rider
She said: I aint gonna fall
I hope you remember what you've seen here.
Boy, as long as you live.

Im gonna have to leave you now
. thats the gift.

Overall Meaning

The song "The Gift" by Tony Joe White is a melancholic reflection on life, loss, and the fleeting nature of existence. The lyrics begin with White sitting in a graveyard, drinking wine and contemplating the moon overhead. The repetition of the phrase "cut your rope" suggests a sense of desperation and perhaps even suicidal thoughts. The image of having a tune going through his ear while crying creates a poignant moment of emotional release. White asserts that there is too much on his mind, which adds to his sense of overwhelm and despair.

As White continues to sit in the graveyard, he hears a whisper in the shadows that seems to indicate a shift in his thinking. It's as if he suddenly gains insight into something that was previously eluding him. He then speaks of feeling like a man walking in his sleep as he heads to his car. The appearance of the shotgun rider, who tells him she won't fall, seems to be a sign of hope and comfort. However, the final lines of the song suggest that White must let go and move on, as he acknowledges that it's time to say goodbye.

Overall, "The Gift" is a poignant and introspective song that speaks to the human experience of grappling with difficult emotions and coming to terms with the realities of life and death.

I was sitting in a graveyard late one night, I
Didn't know why.
Had an old guitar and a bottle of wine
Fingernail moon hanging in the sky.
Kudzu grow.
I had a little song going through my head
then I started to cry
burden laying heavy on my heart
Too much on my mind
I was staring out at the shadows
When a tall woman appeared
I heard a whisper "we know why you're here"
All around her, they were gathered.

Then the guitar was in my hand everybody's singing with
their souls
I can see the release on all their faces but they knew it
was time to go.
They left me there
In the cold gray dawn
I felt like a man walking in his sleep
made it back to my car
But now I had a shotgun rider
She said: "I ain't going far"
I hope you remember what you've seen here... for
as long as you live.
I'm gonna have to leave you now
but you got something to give.

Real musicians making real honest unadulterated music. Nobody white did swamp music better. So many weak talents are successful but just few of us stateside were fans. First heard him when I was 15 or 16? Such a recognizable sound.

Never understood why he wasn't more successful! If you're from down here that sounds like LIFE. Bless his heart.

@genejohnson5530

He was very successful in his music. Nobody can match his style and live performances. He was just the best. Simple tunes and played with plenty of soul and feeling for what he did best. I saw him live and felt very privileged to have enjoyed his performance.

@milanlasarevic4584

@clint45sday35

... it’s was sadden to hear the passing of the guy who influenced Elvis. And while I’m standing here doing dishes listening? I can’t wait to go out front, amplify this to the world, and playing along with my Bass.... it’s the only pure gesture of appreciation? Play it openly to the world while playing along, and playing it loud....I hope the Fiesta across the street don’t mind ....
