Stranger in Paradise
Tony Martin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take my hand
I'm a stranger in paradise
All lost in a wonderland
A stranger in paradise
If I stand starry-eyed
That's the danger in paradise
For mortals who stand beside an angel like you
I saw your face and I ascended
Out of the commonplace into the rare
Somewhere in space I hang suspended
Until I know there's a chance that you care

Won't you answer this fervent prayer
Of a stranger in paradise?
Don't send me in dark despair
From all that I hunger for

But open your angel's arms
To this stranger in paradise

And tell him that he need be
A stranger no more

Overall Meaning

In Tony Martin's song "Stranger in Paradise," the singer addresses their lover, who is perceived as an angel in paradise. The singer expresses their wonder at being lost in this paradise, and acknowledges the danger that comes with it. The singer explains that being in the presence of such an angelic being can be overwhelming for mere mortals like them. The singer then describes how they felt when they saw their lover's face; they ascended out of the mundane into something rare, suspended in space.

Despite the angel's unattainable nature, the singer implores them to answer their prayer and not to leave them in despair. The singer consists that their love could go beyond the paradise, and urges the angel to open their arms to this stranger in paradise, so that they will no longer be a stranger in their lover's world.

I was fortunate enough to see Tony Martin sing this song when he was 95 years old, and he did a concert at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. I will never forget it.. I had previously had a nice conversation with him and his wife, the legendary Syd Charisse, on a flight that I worked as a flight attendant, and they were my passengers... A wonderful singer, and a very nice man.

There are many great versions of this song, Vic Damone, Tony Bennett, Gordon Macrae, to name but three, but Tony Martin outshines them all, what a voice, flawless in delivery and interpretation, a delight every time I hear it, his performance of "Lover come back to Me", from the film "Deep in my Heart", also one not to miss.

Stuart Charles

I met Tony at the Raleigh Hotel in the Caskills in 1994. At the age of 80 he did a Friday night show. He sounded "terrific." He Did his old hits and did a version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" which had the audience on its feet at its end.
I spoke to him later in the coffee shop and he was very gracious. I mentioned to him about his famous novelty song written for him by Sammy Cahn called "Security." He used to fo it in his old night club act. I sang the beging of the dog to him and he almost fell off his chair. He was very happy that that I still remembered it. He then began to sing the rest of it. He still remembered it.
He passed away in 2012 at the age of 98. He and Syd were married for 62 yrs.
She passed away at the age of 86 in 2006.
He was a great singer. She was one of the greatest film dancers of all time.
Watch "Singing in the Rain", The Band Wagon" and "Silk Stockings."
