Love Is Here To Stay
Tony Mottola Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's very clear, our love is here to stay
Not for a year but ever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go

But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long, long way
In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble

They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tony Mottola's Love Is Here To Stay emphasize the immutability of a couple's love in the midst of life's transient pleasures and material things. The opening line, "It's very clear, our love is here to stay– Not for a year but ever and a day," asserts the durability of the love shared by the couple, even as social trends and popular culture fads come and go. The radio, telephone, and movies, the common cultural markers of the time are said to be "passing fancies," which might endure for some time before also fading away.

Despite the potential decay of all that surrounds the couple, their love will remain steadfast. The second verse offers examples of things that may fall apart or deteriorate in time, such as the Rockies or Gibraltar, but ultimately reminds the listener that these structures too are susceptible to decay since they are "only made of clay." The repetition of this line further emphasizes the steadfastness of the couple's love. The suggestion is that while things that are material may ultimately crumble, the couple's love will endure eternally.

Overall, the song Love Is Here To Stay, highlights and holds in high regard the strength and permanence of true love, which is the cornerstone of the happiness and joy found in life.

Hm... Have to say i prefer Barney Kessel's take...

Tony Mottola

Two very talented artists, two very different approaches. Although their careers unfolded on opposite coasts, the guitarists shared a friendship of mutual respect and admiration. When Barney Kessel was honored at Guitar Night at the JVC Jazz Festival in New York in 1997 he asked producer Charles Carlini to have Tony Mottola introduce him at the concert, something my father was honored and proud to do. By the way I like Barney’s recording of this tune too.
