In 1956 Tony formed his first band. In 1958, at 18, he began appearing on the BBC's Oh Boy, playing electric guitar. He was eventually offered a contract to perform at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg, Germany.
While performing in Hamburg between 1960 and 1963, Sheridan employed various backup bands. In 1961, one such band, who had met Sheridan during their first visit to Hamburg in 1960, and who worked with him on their second, was The Beatles (with their line-up at the time as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best). When German Polydor agent Bert Kaempfert saw the pairing on stage, he suggested that they make some recordings together. In 1962, after a series of singles (the first of which, "My Bonnie"/"The Saints" made it to #5 in the Hit Parade), Polydor released the album My Bonnie across Germany. The word Beatles was judged to sound too similar to the German Pidels (pronounced peedles), the plural of a slang term for penis, hence the album was credited to Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers. After The Beatles had gained fame, the album was re-released in Britain, with the credit altered to Tony Sheridan and The Beatles.
By 1967, Sheridan had become disillusioned with his Beatle-brought fame. As he was more concerned by the Vietnam War, Sheridan agreed to perform for the Allied troops. While in Vietnam however, the band that he had assembled was fired upon and one of the members was killed. Reuters reported that Sheridan himself had died. For his work entertaining the Allies, Sheridan was made an honorary Captain of the United States army.
In the early 1970s, Sheridan managed a West German radio programme of blues music, which was well-received. In 1978, the Star Club was reopened, and Sheridan performed there along with Elvis Presley's TCB Band.
On August 13, 2002, Sheridan released Vagabond, a collection largely of his own material, but also including a new cover version of "Skinny Minnie", a song he had years earlier recorded for his first album.

I don't know what I'd do
I guess I would die, sweetheart
If I don't get a kiss from you
Take out some insurance on me, baby
Take out some insurance on me, baby
Well, if you ever, ever say goodbye
Oh, if you want me, baby
You've gotta come to me
Mm, I'm just like a stump in a field
You just can't move me
Take out some insurance on me, baby
Ooh, some insurance on me, baby
Well, if you ever, ever say goodbye
I'm gonna go right home and die
Well, if you want me, baby
Mm, you've gotta come to me
I'm just like a stump in a field
You just can't move me
Take out some insurance on me, baby
Mm, some insurance on me, baby
Well, if you ever, ever say goodbye
I'm gonna go right home and die
Well, if you leave me, baby
I don't know what I'd do
I guess I would die, sweetheart
If I don't get a kiss from you
Take out some insurance on me, baby
Woo, some God-damned insurance on me, baby
If you ever, ever say goodbye
I'm gonna go right home and die
The lyrics to Tony Sheridan's "If You Love Me Baby" are a classic example of a love song that is delivered with a good amount of desperation. The opening lines of the song set the tone for the rest of the lyrics which speak about the singer's love and how it would hurt if their lover were to leave them. The lines "If you leave me, baby / I don't know what I'd do / I guess I would die, sweetheart / If I don't get a kiss from you" are all about how the singer would feel if their lover were to leave.
The lyrics then shift to the idea of insurance which is suggested as a means to make sure that the singer's lover will never leave him. He sings "Take out some insurance on me, baby / Take out some insurance on me, baby / Well, if you ever, ever say goodbye / I'm gonna go right home and die." This is all about how the singer wants his lover to make sure she never leaves him, and to do so he requests her to take out insurance on him, which might mean giving her name to him or on expensive items. The singer becomes more desperate in the end when he says, "Take out some insurance on me, baby / Woo, some God-damned insurance on me, baby / If you ever, ever say goodbye / I'm gonna go right home and die."
Overall, the song is about the singer's need for his lover and how he cannot live without her. The insurance line is intriguing, as it shows the singer's insecurities and the need to make sure the relationship lasts. The song is a classic example of a love song told through the lens of desperation.

If you leave me, baby
If you decide to break up with me,
I don't know what I'd do
I don't have any idea how I would react to that,
I guess I would die, sweetheart

If I don't get a kiss from you
Especially if it happened because you no longer loved me, or wouldn't even kiss me anymore.
Take out some insurance on me, baby
Make sure to protect yourself from the pain you would cause me by leaving,

So please, if you love me, stay with me,

Take out some insurance on me, baby
Always remember how much I need you,
Woo, some God-damned insurance on me, baby

I'm gonna go right home and die
It would feel like the end of my world, and I would give up all hope.
