While performing in Hamburg between 1960 and 1963, Sheridan employed various backup bands. In 1961, one such band, who had met Sheridan during their first visit to Hamburg in 1960, and who worked with him on their second, was The Beatles (with their line-up at the time as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Pete Best). When German Polydor agent Bert Kaempfert saw the pairing on stage, he suggested that they make some recordings together. In 1962, after a series of singles (the first of which, "My Bonnie"/"The Saints" made it to #5 in the Hit Parade), Polydor released the album My Bonnie across Germany. The word Beatles was judged to sound too similar to the German Pidels (pronounced peedles), the plural of a slang term for penis, hence the album was credited to Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers. After The Beatles had gained fame, the album was re-released in Britain, with the credit altered to Tony Sheridan and The Beatles.

By 1967, Sheridan had become disillusioned with his Beatle-brought fame. As he was more concerned by the Vietnam War, Sheridan agreed to perform for the Allied troops. While in Vietnam however, the band that he had assembled was fired upon and one of the members was killed. Reuters reported that Sheridan himself had died. For his work entertaining the Allies, Sheridan was made an honorary Captain of the United States army.

In the early 1970s, Sheridan managed a West German radio programme of blues music, which was well-received. In 1978, the Star Club was reopened, and Sheridan performed there along with Elvis Presley's TCB Band.

On August 13, 2002, Sheridan released Vagabond, a collection largely of his own material, but also including a new cover version of "Skinny Minnie", a song he had years earlier recorded for his first album.

R.I.P McGinnity. I was at the same school in Norwich as him; he was the singer with 'The Saints' skiffle group.A bunch of us would get together in the Music Rooms at lunchtimes and play Skiffle; sometimes Mac would be there, sometimes Kenny Packwood, The Saints' rhythm guitarist, sometimes anybody with a guitar. I was learning 'Cello at the time, and tried to provide bass lines. I was crap , but McGinnity and Packwood never told me to clear off!

@Chris Brown Absolutely. I was there - I saw him sing this several times. The Beatles left in November 1962, when I/we arrived. This group was still called the Beat brothers, but no one from the Beatles was in the group, for the simple reason that they were no longer in Hamburg. Actually you can hear Tony say "A little bit of Roy Young there" just before the organ solo. Listen to the guitar solo near the end... pure Sheridan, brilliant ! He knew how to drive a group like very few singers do - the groove is phenomenal.

This discography is completely wrong. There's an organ and though it sounds like Tony Sheridan none of his backing sounds like the Beat Brothers aka Beatles. The only Sheridan EP with the Beatles I know has Ain't She Sweet, Take Out Some Insurance and My Bonnie, on it.

Want to know the real history of Tony Sheridan in Hamburg? Google The Jets in Hamburg. The first group that Tony Sheridan joined to play in Hamburg's Kaiserkeller and later the Top Ten Club. Included in that group was a good friend of mine, Colin (Melander) Crawley, Pete Wharton, Jimmy Ward and Rick Hardy. Pete, Jimmy and Rick returned to England, but Tony and Colin stayed and picked up Tony Cavanaugh, a black American expat soldier from Indianapolis to play drums and Roy Young on piano. They were the nexus of what became the Beat Brothers, backing Tony after he and the Beatles recorded "My Bonnie" for Polydor and had to use the name Beat Brothers because they were about to sign or had signed a contract with EMI. After the Beatles left Hamburg for the second time and went back to Liverpool, Tony needed members for his Star Club Combo and the members of the Beat Brothers became an amalgam of musicians.

I wish, I had been an adult when this type of music AND the Beatles were in their heyday. This rocks, wow I could only imagine what it would be like in a place like the Cavern or a small stage pub hearing something with this much energy. NO autotune, NO crappy singing croaking like frogs or worse, but all fun. You can hear the fun they are having performing. I know you can find this music in some venues here and there but its work to find it. So wish I had been alive and an adult then, Music on the radio today is so lifeless and over perfected to me. Maybe it's just me. I wish they would play this on our indie stations where I live at least. Well I have youtube to get to hear it I an thankful for that!

Tony Sheridan said that John in those days had a magnetic personality. Everybody wanted to be with him or sit next to him. He was wild and the German fans adored him. At first they thought Paul might be gay due partly to his high arched eyebrows. Years later John performed this song on the end of one of his albums. From memory I think it was John Lennons Rock & Roll.

As a 1961-1964 Sheridan/Beat Bros & 1962-1964 Beatles record collector, I must say that this video is tremendous at capturing exactly what it was like in 1961-1962 for the Beatles (Beat Bros) in Hamburg Germany. It's too bad that talent-based rock music is all but gone today.

The nonsense written here is amazing. Tony and the Beatbrothers, were a band in their own right, when recording for Polydor. The Philips records listed them under Star - combo. Not a single Beatle on them. In the early records, the drummer was Johnny Watson, then Tony Cavanough, an African American. He only lasted a short while. Jimmy Doyle from Dublin is on all the Star - Combo recordings. The reason they were called that was Tony himself was contracted to Polydor, hence on some recordings he was listed as Dan Shery. How I know that ? Married to the saxophone player for 53 years.

There's no way. That's way too high pitched to be Sheridan. And waaaaay to shaky; all around a TERRIBLE vocal performance that Tony Sheridan would NEVER deliver. If he were the vocalist, that whole audition tape would have been much better. Not buying it. Ever.

@scatteredfrog All Tony Sheridan. Particulary discernable non-McCartney vocals in notes and pitches which give it away in several of those tracks. In " Til There Was You " it was '.... then there was music...' - the "" music " bit gives it away. He's attempting to be sort of McCartney-ish with it, That sort of thing. " Sure To Fall ". The title words of that track. It lacks that McCartney falsetto ' syrup ', like in "...in love with you....." And " Love Of The Loved ". The "...ooohoooh...ding da ding ding ding......". Someone else, not McCartney. In many other instances the resonances were quite McCartney-ish, very close on, but it was not him. Sheridan could also do the Lennon straight-on fairly well. It was a case of " This Sheridan guy can cover all our stuff. Let's cover our vocal arses when its the real deal, in case we're otherwise all over the place with it. ". And there is not a single note of bass played in the entire set. McCartney was there. He rocked up, but it was Spew ! Splatt ! " Who ? What ? ", Snot blast , and so on.

@scatteredfrog Tony Sheridan did THE BALANCE of the lead vocals for the Decca audition, irregardless of whatever the punce McCartney, or whoever else, may have done since to falsify the records. You cite a track and I'll tell you if its Sheridan or not. McCartney got sozzled the night before, but they collectively wanted a polished front man for the lead vocals anyway. This was a contract shot for them and so they didn't want it hanging on their own vocals. Their track selections for that was with a view to Sheridan's vocals.

This track has helped my through a depression phase again, in teenage years I adored Swami Poubo Sharan(also known as Tony Sheridan i perfornabce) for the routine, solidity and professionalism This track was on an EP which also featured a Beatles collaboration in Sweet Georgia Brown, but I think this song more defines better what was Hamburhg szene and what it was all about. I alos respect Swanis personality and this choice to priorities spirituality in late years,

I own the CD of this recording. The liner notes that came with it state that the band backing Tony Sheridan on this recording was Joey Dee & the Starlighters. They were from New Jersey and were the house band at the Peppermint Lounge in New York, and had a huge hit in the mid 60s called "Peppermint Twist". If you listen to it you can hear their "sound" is very similar to the instrumentation on this recording.

Cry for a shadow was my preferred instrumental music for years.... a friend of mine had a vynil record that in Brazil carried a title " The Beatles in Hamburg " by Polydor and I listened it for weeks, trying to play this song on a guitar, after I decided to abandon to learn to play an accordion my dad gave me and I'm very sorry I don't own it today, he selled it for a friend and bought me some vynil record discs - A hard day's night, Rubber Soul and Between the buttons from Stones - and an acoustic guitar, thanks to him I learned to play it - very bad - and he stills stayed happy with me, he likes music so much but learned to play no instrument ... RIP

The recording "My Bonnie" (Polydor 24673A) is titled "Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers" and was the recording by which Brian Epstein became aware of The Beatles. There seem to be two truths here, or, as Donald Trump would say, "alternative facts. " ;-)

The beat Brothers are identical with the Beatles. These stood at that time under contract with Bert Kaempfert. Because there was no German translation for the name "the Beatles", one decided the volume for the recordings the name Beat-Brothers to give. Also the title "Ya Ya" was published under the label "Tony Sheridan and the beat Brothers" by Polydor N° 21485.
