Red Red Wine
Tony Tribe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Red, red wine
Go to my head
Make me forget that I
Still need her so

Red, red wine
It's up to you
All I can do, Ive done
But memories won't go
No, memories won't go

I'd have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head

I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone

It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tony Tribe's song Red Red Wine are about trying to forget about a lost love by drinking red wine. The first verse opens with the line, "Red, red wine, go to my head, make me forget that I still need her so." The singer is using alcohol as a way to cope with the fact that they still have feelings for their ex-partner, but they know they need to move on. The chorus repeats the phrase "red, red wine" and acknowledges that the power to forget lies in the hands of the drink.

The second verse continues with the theme of memories that won't go away. The singer says, "All I can do, I've done, but memories won't go, no memories won't go." They have tried to move on and do everything they can, but they still think about their ex all the time. The pre-chorus says, "I'd have sworn that with time, thoughts of you would leave my head, I was wrong, and I find just one thing makes me forget." This line shows that the singer has tried to move on and forget about their ex, but nothing has worked. The only thing that helps is red wine. The chorus is repeated and the final line of the song says, "It's tearing apart my blue, blue heart." The singer is heartbroken and struggling with the fact that they can't move on.

Red, red wine,
Goes to my head..
Makes me forget that I,
Still need her so..

Red, red wine,
It's up to you..
All I can do, I've done.
Memories won't go;
Memories won't go..

I have sworn, that with time,
Thoughts of you would leave my head.
I was wrong, and I find,
Just one thing makes me, forget.

Red, red wine,
Stay close to me.
Don't let me be alone,
It's tearin' apart..
My blue, blue heart.

(..)

I have sworn, that with time,
Thoughts of you would leave my head.
I was wrong, and I find,
Just one thing makes me, forget.

Red, red wine,
Stay close to me.
Don't let me be alone,
It's tearin' apart

More Time Needed

This record reached number 46 in the U.K. pop charts on 22.07.1969. Reggae specialist shops in London and Birmingham (and other cities) were selling this by the boxload but these weren’t counted when compiling the charts.

Thank you, Tony Tribe, thank you ska, thank you Jamaica and all who brought this music to my sore ears. Such an uplifting of my downtrodden spirit. Ahhhhh. I know much of this music was reaction to oppression. But only one tactic will run the oppressors out of town - when the masses unify and tell them "NO MORE!" They always divide their targets before conquering. So, remember who the real enemy is. It is NOT your neighbor, even if they don't act or look like you.
