Disgustipated

And the angel of the lord came unto me
Snatching me up from my place of slumber
And took me on high and higher still
Until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself
And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own Midwest
And as we descended cries of impending doom rose from the soil
One thousand nay a million voices full of fear
And terror possessed me then
And I begged Angel of the Lord what are these tortured screams?
And the angel said unto me
These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots!
You see, Reverend Maynard
Tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust
And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat
Like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared
"Hear me now, I have seen the light!
They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul!
Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!
Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus

It was daylight when you woke up in your ditch
You looked up at your sky then
That made blue be your color, you had your knife there with you too
When you stood up there was goo all over your clothes
Your hands were sticky
You wiped them on your grass, so now your color was green
Oh Lord, why did everything always have to keep changing like this
You were already getting nervous again
Your head hurt and it rang when you stood up
Your head was almost empty
It always hurt you when you woke up like this
You crawled up out of your ditch onto your gravel road and began to walk
Waiting for the rest of your mind to come back to you
You can see the car parked far down the road and you walked toward it
If God is our Father, you thought, then Satan must be our cousin
Why didn't anyone else understand these important things?
You got to your car and tried all the doors
They were locked. it was a red car and it was new
There was an expensive leather camera case laying on the seat
Out across your field, you could see two tiny people walking by your woods
You began to walk towards them

Now red was your color and, of course
Those little people out there were yours too

Overall Meaning

The song "Disgustipated" by Tool is a disturbing and surrealistic masterpiece that features a spoken-word passage detailing a disturbing vision of a man who is visited by an angel of the lord in his dream. The angel takes him to the spaces betwixt the air itself, where he is shown a farmland in the Midwest. The man hears the cries of carrots, who are terrified because their harvest is coming, and to them, it's like the Holocaust. The man is horrified by what he hears and begs for the rabbits to wear glasses to save his "brothers". The subsequent verses repeat the phrase, "Life feeds on life feeds on life," emphasizing the cyclical and necessary nature of life, and the fact that things must die in order for other things to live.

The surreal imagery in the song suggests a deep respect and reverence for all life and the interconnectedness of all living things. The man's plea for the rabbits to be saved suggests a deep empathy for others, even if they are not human. Tool is not just a metal band but also a deeply philosophical one, and this song reflects this in its analysis of the cyclical nature of life and death.

Line by Line Meaning

And the angel of the lord came unto me
The singer had a spiritual experience where they were visited by an entity that they equate with the angel of the lord.

Snatching me up from my place of slumber
The entity lifted the singer from a deep sleep or unconscious state.

And took me on high and higher still
The entity carried the singer higher and higher into the sky or beyond the physical plane.

Until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself
The entity carried the artist into an abstract or supernatural realm, beyond the physical world.

And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own Midwest
The artist found themselves in a farmland in the Midwest region of the United States, which may have some symbolic or metaphorical significance.

And as we descended cries of impending doom rose from the soil
As the entity and the singer descended, they heard the sounds of cries or screams coming from the land beneath them, which may have seemed like a warning of some kind.

One thousand nay a million voices full of fear
The cries or screams that the singer heard were so numerous that they couldn't be counted or estimated, and they all conveyed intense fear.

And terror possessed me then
The artist felt overcome with terror and fear as a result of the screams or the situation they found themselves in.

And I begged Angel of the Lord what are these tortured screams?
The artist pleaded with the entity to explain the source or meaning of the screams they heard.

And the angel said unto me
The entity responded to the artist's plea for explanation.

These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots!
The entity revealed that the source of the screams was coming from the carrots in the farmland, which may be a metaphor for the voiceless suffering of plants or agricultural products.

You see, Reverend Maynard
The artist addresses someone named Reverend Maynard, who may or may not be a real person, but is likely a reference to someone who inspired the song or influenced the artist's thinking.

Tomorrow is harvest day and to them, it is the holocaust
The entity explains that the next day is harvest day, when the carrots will be killed and harvested, which is equivalent to a holocaust from the carrots' perspective, as they are living beings with a consciousness and life.

And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat
The singer woke up suddenly from their sleep, sweating and possibly disturbed by the experience they had just described.

Like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared
The singer's emotion was so powerful that it felt like the tears of millions of people, and they let out a loud, emotional scream or roar.

"Hear me now, I have seen the light!
The artist is proclaiming that they have had a spiritual or intellectual revelation.

They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul!
The artist asserts that carrots, and presumably all living things, have consciousness, life, and a soul, and therefore deserve respect and protection.

Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!
The line is likely a non-literal expression of the singer's anger and frustration with humans' lack of compassion for other living beings. The idea of rabbits wearing glasses may be a metaphor for the ways in which humans exploit and dehumanize animals.

Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you, Jesus
The singer is asking for agreement or support from others in their beliefs, possibly with a religious or spiritual connotation.

This is necessary Life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on
This line is repeated several times, suggesting that the cycle of life, death, and consumption is an inherent and necessary part of existence, possibly to counteract the idea that humans can or should control or eliminate it.

It was daylight when you woke up in your ditch
The song now abruptly switches to second person perspective, addressing an unknown individual who wakes up in a rough or uncomfortable environment.

You looked up at your sky then That made blue be your color, you had your knife there with you too
The person who woke up noticed the color of the sky and was holding a knife, whose significance is unclear.

When you stood up, there was goo all over your clothes Your hands were sticky You wiped them on your grass
The person noticed that their clothes were dirty or stained, but they attempted to clean them off by wiping their hands on the grass.

So now your color was green Oh Lord, why did everything always have to keep changing like this
The person's current color, or mood, was described as green, which may have some symbolic meaning. The person expresses frustration that things always seem to be changing unpredictably.

You were already getting nervous again Your head hurt and it rang when you stood up Your head was almost empty It always hurt you when you woke up like this
The person experiences a sense of anxiety or discomfort as they try to reconcile their memories and thoughts after waking up from a confusing or disorienting state.

You crawled up out of your ditch onto your gravel road and began to walk Waiting for the rest of your mind to come back to you
The person tries to regain their bearings and begins to walk down a road, hoping to become more lucid or aware.

You can see the car parked far down the road and you walked toward it
The person sees a car in the distance and heads in that direction.

If God is our Father, you thought, then Satan must be our cousin Why didn't anyone else understand these important things?
The person has a philosophical or theological thought about the nature of good and evil, and feels frustrated that they are alone in these thoughts.

You got to your car and tried all the doors They were locked It was a red car and it was new There was an expensive leather camera case laying on the seat
The person encounters a new, locked, and potentially expensive car with a camera case inside, which may be a tempting or intriguing object.

Out across your field, you could see two tiny people walking by your woods You began to walk towards them
The person sees two distant figures and starts to head towards them, though their motivations or intentions are unclear.

Now red was your color and, of course Those little people out there were yours too
The person's color changes to red, which may indicate a shift in mood or attitude. They also assert ownership or dominance over the two people they see in the distance, which may symbolize a desire for control or validation.

I would love to recreate that rhythm with a shotgun. You would have to get good at loading the shells in between.

You would have to load 5 shells unchambered then do as follows,

1. pump-fire-pump-fire-pump-fire-pump-fire
2. load 4 shells quickly, empty shell is chambered so gun is safe. Still point downrange only.

repeat steps 1 and 2

1. pump-fire-pump-fire-pump-fire-pump-fire-pump
2. wait a bit
3. fire (this is where the 5th shell comes in, you would also have to have a magazine tube that holds 5 or more shells for this)

Me: the shotgun

I think that repetitive gunshot sound is part of the reason I love this song. That and the carrot Holocaust thing.

Interesting thing about carrots: my wife and I bake them in the oven with some olive oil, salt, and pepper. They come out of the oven whistling (the cries of the carrots I assume).
