Opiate
Tool Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Choices always were a problem for you
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to use you
Like me, like me
Like me, like me

If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me now, don't you judge or question
You are broken now, but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand up, hand upon you

My god's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like I do
We both want
To rape you

Jesus Christ
Why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eyes, blind me with your light now

If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me now, don't you judge or question
You are broken now, but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do

Jesus Christ
Why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eyes, blind me with your light now
Jesus Christ
Why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eyes, blind me with your lies now

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand up, hand upon you

My god's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like I do

We both want
To rape you

Overall Meaning

The song "Opiate" by Tool is known for its controversial lyrics and dark themes, and the interpretation of the lyrics is no different. The song starts with the idea that choices have always been a problem for the person being addressed in the lyrics. It then suggests that what the individual needs is someone strong to guide them, someone who can fix them and lead them on the right path. Interestingly, the person addressing the listener throughout the song says "like me" four times, suggesting that they are the one who can be the strong guide the listener needs.

As the song continues, we see the singer asserting that their God's will becomes them, that their God speaks through them, and that they both want to "rape" the listener. This suggests that the singer believes themselves to be a prophet or messenger of God and that they can control and manipulate the listener by using their faith. This is reinforced when the lyrics say that the listener must trust in the singer and do everything they are told.

The final section of the song describes the singer's experiences with friends who have taken drugs and become erratic and unpredictable. The lyrics suggest a disdain for those who use drugs, and it's possible that the entire song is a warning against the dangers of blind faith, much like the dangers of drug addiction.

Overall, "Opiate" is a thought-provoking song that explores themes of control, manipulation, faith, and addiction. It forces the listener to question their own beliefs and be wary of those who claim to have all the answers.

No matter how much the music changes it's still Tool no matter what. There's just a feeling that you can't escape when you listen to their music. It's more than just his voice or the beat. There's a deeper feeling that comes along with every track on every album. Tool will forever be one of the greatest groups there ever will be.

Implementing those epic time signatures, meters, beats, and otherworldly tempos seemingly based in Sacred Geometry. Listening to Tool is akin to taking your neural network to the day spa for some pampering.
