Reflection
Tool Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have come curiously close to the end, though
Beneath my self-indulgent pitiful hole
Defeated, I concede and move closer
I may find comfort here
I may find peace within the emptiness
How pitiful

It's calling me (calling me)
It's calling me (calling me)
It's calling me (calling me)
It's calling me

And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping
The moon tells me a secret, a confidant
As full and bright as I am
This light is not my own and
A million light reflections pass over me

The source is bright and endless
She resuscitates the hopeless
Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting

And as I pull my head out, I am without one doubt
Don't want to be down here soothing my narcissism
I must crucify the ego before it's far too late
I pray the light lifts me out

Before I pine away (pine away)
Before I pine away (pine away)
Before I pine away (pine away)
Before I pine away

So crucify the ego, before it's far too late
And leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical
And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable
So let the light touch you
So let the words spill through
And let them pass right through
Bringing out our hope and reason

Before we pine away (pine away)
Before we pine away (pine away)

Before we pine away (pine away)
Before we pine away

Overall Meaning

The song Reflection by Tool is a reflection on the journey toward self-discovery and enlightenment. The lyrics describe the singer's descent into darkness and his subsequent realization that he must crucify his ego to transcend his negative and self-indulgent tendencies. The singer acknowledges his own futility and seeks comfort in the emptiness of his existence. He is drawn toward a bright and endless source of light that he recognizes as the source of all life.

I love every last TOOL song but, this was playing constantly through my earbuds while going through chemo. This song means more to me than anyone will ever know.

@bloodswan

I know the feeling, not with this song as much as I love it but I understand that thing that gets you through it.

Listen to a band called lamb

@unpopularopinion1776

I'm not going thru chemo but I am trying to live sober after 20 years of being an alcoholic. Today is day 101 and everyday feels like such a struggle. But this song speaks to me now more than it did when this album came out.

@tails324

@@lisasloey302 what should I listen to? That name strikes me as something I should try

TOOL is humanity's band. Tribal. Melodic. Thoughtful. One of our best offerings to the universe.

I understand and appreciate your sentiment but tribal is inconsistent with humanism.

@@q.bandit9612 how so? Do you not have hair on your knuckles? Or are you still dragging them and haven’t evolved from the tribe?
