Louie Louie
Toots and The Maytals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go
Yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go

A fine girl who waited for me
I catch a ship across the sea
I sailed the ship all alone
I wondered when I'm gonna make it home

Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go
Yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go

Three nights and days I sailed the sea
I think of the girl constantly
On the ship, I dream she there
I smell the rose that's in her hair

Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go
Yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go

I see Jamaican moon above
See the girl I'm thinking of
I take her in my arms and then
Say I'll never leave again

Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go
Yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go

Oh, I gotta go now
Uh, huh, I gotta go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Toots and The Maytals's song Louie Louie is a love song about a man who is leaving his home for a period of time and is struggling with the thoughts of being away from a girl he loves. The song begins with the singer expressing his need to leave for his journey, using the repetition of "Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go" to emphasize his urgency in having to leave. He then speaks of a girl who was waiting for him, and how he had to catch a ship across the sea, leaving him alone on the sea with only thoughts of when he'll make it back home.

Throughout the next verses, the singer continues to struggle with being away from the girl he loves. He states that he thinks of her constantly while being on the ship, dreaming that she is there with him. He even speaks of being able to smell the rose that's in her hair. The singer's infatuation with this girl is so strong that even the Jamaican moon reminds him of her. Finally, when he returns home and sees the girl he's been thinking of, he takes her in his arms and tells her that he'll never leave again, causing the song to end with a repetition of "Louie, Louie, oh baby, I gotta go".
