Toploader’s live career began playing with the likes of Coldplay and Muse in small venues across the UK. They later went on to back the likes of Paul Weller, Robbie Williams and Bon Jovi, becoming the last British band to play the original Wembley stadium. A string of top 20 hits both home and abroad followed, with Toploader quickly rising to become one of the most popular acts in British music. Their debut album, Onka’s Big Moka, sold over 1 million units and remained in the Top 5 of the UK album chart for over six months. Their cover of King Harvest’s song “Dancing in the Moonlight” became a global hit for the band. Their second album ‘Magic Hotel’, reached number 3, beating the number 4 of the debut. The result was over two million album sales to their name.
The band decided to break in 2003 due to the demise of their record label S2. In 2009, after an extended hiatus, they signed a one-album deal with Underdogs Music for their third album, which was released in June 2011.
The band line-up includes four of the five original members: Joseph Washbourn, Dan Hipgrave, Rob Green and Matt Knight.

The breeze it strokes my feet that feels fine
Losing the track of the time
Confused in a sun covered time
Birdsong is all I hear while I am hear
I'm lost but cannot see these things I feel
Circles appear in my mind
You might feel laughter in the sun
But laughter might help us when were done
You might feel laughter in the sun
But laughter might help us when were done
Silhouetted by the sun my angel comes
Dressed in white
A broad white smile outshines the sun
Oh such a picture is this
My angel she stoops for a kiss
You might feel laughter in the sun
But laughter might help us when were done
You might feel laughter in the sun
But laughter might help us when were done
I said you might feel laughter in the sun
But laughter might help us when were done
You might feel laughter in the sun
But laughter might help us when were done
The lyrics to "Summer Cycle" by Toploader paint a vivid picture of a carefree summer day spent outdoors. The singer describes the sensation of the sun kissing their cheek and the breeze gently stroking their feet. They describe feeling confused and losing track of time in this idyllic setting. The sound of birds singing is the only thing they can hear, and they feel as though they are lost but unable to see the world around them.
As the song progresses, the singer's thoughts turn to the idea that laughter might help them when they are done. They repeat this phrase, suggesting that even amidst the joy of a perfect summer day, there is an underlying awareness that life is fleeting and that laughter can help us cope with that reality. The song takes a romantic turn as the singer describes their angel coming to meet them, dressed in white and with a broad white smile that outshines the sun. The image of this angel stooping down for a kiss is a perfect encapsulation of the beauty and possibility of a summer romance.
Overall, "Summer Cycle" is a bittersweet celebration of the joys and sorrows of summer. The lyrics capture the simple pleasure of basking in the sun and enjoying the beauty of the natural world, but also acknowledge the transient nature of these experiences and the role that laughter can play in helping us cope with life's ups and downs.
