Initially playing in colleges, Toquinho's professional career took off in the 1960s at shows promoted by radio personality Walter Silva at the famous Paramount theater in São Paulo. He composed his first recorded song with Chico Buarque entitled "Lua Cheia" (Full Moon). His first big hit was composed in 1970 with Jorge Benjor, "Que Maravilha" (What a Wonder). That same year he was invited by Vinícius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), to participate in a series of shows in Buenos Aires, forming a solid partnership that would continue for 11 years and produce 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows.
After the death of Vinícius de Moraes in 1980, he went on to pursue a solo career, often performing with other talented musicians like Paulinho da Viola, Danilo Caymmi, Paulinho Nogueira and Chico Buarque. He continues to record and play.

Mas o amor sabe um segredo o medo pode matar o seu coração
Água de beber, água de beber camará, água de beber, água de beber camará.
Eu nunca fiz coisa tão certa entrei pra escola do perdão
A minha casa vive aberta abri todas as portas do coração
Água de beber, água de beber camará, água de beber, água de beber camará.
Eu sempre tive uma certeza que só me deu desilusão
É que o amor é uma tristeza muita mágoa demais para um coração.
The lyrics of "Águas de Março" (or "Waters of March" in English) by Toquinho convey themes of love, fear, and vulnerability. The opening lines express the desire to love but the fear that accompanies it, as the persona wants to safeguard their heart. They acknowledge that love holds a secret, and that fear has the potential to destroy one's heart.
The repetition of "Água de beber" (water to drink) throughout the song can be interpreted metaphorically. It represents the necessity of love to quench one's thirst for emotional fulfillment. The persona recognizes that embracing love is the right thing to do and has entered the "school of forgiveness," suggesting a willingness to learn and grow.
The reference to opening one's house and heart symbolizes vulnerability and a willingness to be open to love. However, the persona has experienced disappointment in love and believes that it is a source of sadness and pain, causing disillusionment. Despite this, they still acknowledge the importance of love as a fundamental need, comparing it to the essentiality of water to drink.
Overall, "Águas de Março" explores the complexities and contradictions of love, touching on themes of fear, vulnerability, disappointment, and the necessity of embracing love despite its potential pitfalls.
