Initially playing in colleges, Toquinho's professional career took off in the 1960s at shows promoted by radio personality Walter Silva at the famous Paramount theater in São Paulo. He composed his first recorded song with Chico Buarque entitled "Lua Cheia" (Full Moon). His first big hit was composed in 1970 with Jorge Benjor, "Que Maravilha" (What a Wonder). That same year he was invited by Vinícius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), to participate in a series of shows in Buenos Aires, forming a solid partnership that would continue for 11 years and produce 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows.
After the death of Vinícius de Moraes in 1980, he went on to pursue a solo career, often performing with other talented musicians like Paulinho da Viola, Danilo Caymmi, Paulinho Nogueira and Chico Buarque. He continues to record and play.
Receita de Felicidade
Toquinho Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Misture com um pouquinho de amizade;
Junte com carinho uma pontinha de paixão
E uma pitadinha de saudade.
Pegue o dom divino maternal de uma mulher
E um sorriso limpo de criança;
Junte a ingenuidade de um primeiro amor qualquer
Peça emprestada a ternura de um casal
E a luz da estrada dos que amam pra valer;
Tenha sempre muito amor,
Que o amor nunca faz mal.
Pinte a vida com o arco-íris do prazer;
Sonhe, pois sonhar ainda é fundamental
E um sonho sempre pode acontecer.
The lyrics to Toquinho's song Receita de Felicidade are essentially a recipe for happiness. The first stanza instructs the listener to take small bits of affection and illusions and mix them with a little bit of friendship. Along with this, a pinch of passion and nostalgia is added. The next stanza adds the maternal instinct of a woman and the innocent smile of a child. It then instructs the listener to mix the naivety of a first love and the everlasting glimmer of hope. Finally, the recipe concludes with borrowing the tenderness of a couple and the clarity of the road for those who love deeply.
Ultimately, the recipe for happiness is to always have love and to never let go of the ability to dream. The lyrics suggest that love is not only something that is shared between two people, but it is also something that can be borrowed from others, and it never does harm.
