China
Tori Amos Lyrics

China all the way to New York
I can feel the distance getting close
You're right next to me
But I need an airplane
I can feel the distance as you breathe

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China decorates our table
Funny how the cracks don't seem to show
Pour the wine dear
You say we'll take a holiday
But we never can agree on where to go

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
In your eyes I saw a future together
You just look away in the distance

China all the way toNew York
Maybe you got lost in Mexico
You're right next to me
I think that you can hear me
Funny how the distance learns to grow

Sometimes I think you want me to touch you
How can I when you build a great wall around you
I can feel the distance

I can feel the distance
I can feel the distance getting close

Overall Meaning

"China" by Tori Amos is a song about distance and disconnectedness in a relationship. The first verse talks about the physical distance between the singer and her partner, who is right next to her but she still feels the need for an airplane to bridge the emotional gap. This is followed by a line about the partner building a great wall around them, making it difficult for the singer to connect with them. She feels like they could have a future together, but her partner looks away in the distance, indicating a lack of interest or investment in the relationship.

The second verse talks about how "China" decorates their table, maybe as a symbol of their attempt to bridge the gap, but it's not enough to hide the cracks in their relationship. They try to plan a vacation, but even that they can't agree on. The third verse suggests that the partner may have got lost somewhere along the way and that the distance between them is only growing.

Overall, the song speaks to the frustration of feeling emotionally disconnected from someone who is physically present. It's a poignant reminder that sometimes, even when we're in the same room with someone, emotional barriers can make it feel like we're a million miles away.

China decora nuestra mesa

Words cannot express the beauty contained in this song.

+Francisco Partida That's what a song is. Words and music. The videos just ruin the experience. There was a time when people would purchase something called a "Hi Fi system" and just sit and listen to music. It was magic, and it's all but gone now in today's world. Sad.

+Rusty Z I cannot put it any better.
