Ride On
Tori Amos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lily is dancing
On the table
We've all been
Pushed
Too far
I guess on days
Like this
You know who your
Friends are
Just another dead fag
To you that's all
Just another light missing
On a long taxi ride
Taxi ride

And I'm down to
Your last cigarette and
This "we are one" crap
As you're invading
This thing you call
Love - she smiles
Way too much but
I'm glad you're
On my side, sure
I'm glad you're on
My side still

You think you deserve
A trust fund
Just because you
Want one
Sure you talk the talk
When you need to
I fear
The whole world is
Starting to
Believe you
Just another dead fag
To you that's all
Just another light missing
In a long taxi line
Taxi line

And I'm down to
Your last cigarette and
This "we are one" crap
As you're invading
This thing you call
Love - she smiles
Way too much but
I'm glad you're
On my side, sure
I'm glad you're on
My side still

Lily is dancing
On the
Table
We've all been pushed
Too far today
Even a glamorous
Bitch can be in
Need
This is where you know
The honey
From the
Killer bees
I'm glad you're on
My side
Sure
I'm glad you're on
My side
Sure
I'm glad you're on
My side still

Got a long taxi ride

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tori Amos’s song Taxi Ride are a commentary on superficiality, homophobia, and pretension. The first verse, “Lily is dancing on the table, we've all been pushed too far,” sets the scene of a party or gathering where tension is high and people are acting out. A homophobic slur is then used, “Just another dead fag to you that's all, just another light missing on a long taxi ride,” highlighting the singer’s frustration and anger at how little some people value the lives of others.

The second verse continues the theme of superficiality and pretension. The singer is down to their last cigarette and tired of hearing platitudes like “we are one,” which seem hollow and meaningless. The line “Sure you talk the talk when you need to, I fear the whole world is starting to believe you” suggests that the singer is surrounded by people who pretend to care about important issues, but are only using them for their own gain. The song concludes with the repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the feeling of being stuck in a never-ending, lonely ride.

Overall, Taxi Ride is a commentary on the ways in which we can be disconnected from each other, lost in our own worlds without truly seeing or understanding those around us. It highlights the darkness that can accompany such feelings of isolation and superficial connections to others.

The message behind this song is versatile towards so many situations and people. Reminds me of what Britney Spears is going through with her family. "The whole world is starting to believe you".... There are lots of songs in this world and Taxi Ride may sound similar to many of them but still Tori and her pen and ability to authentically express her world view make this a real gem amongst her discography, forever in my playlists.

One of my favorite Tori vocal arrangements. I got into her with Pele, and Father Lucifer will always be the best, to me, in that regard, but this one does kiss miraculous beautifully.

ronald grant

this is one of Tori's most emotional songs, love it

It was absolutely stunning! Really! But I can understand why it didn't get picked. The imagery was moving and fabulously "maiden-mother-crone-like", the way the "mother" led both ends of the spectrum into the light was brilliant. AND the way the one was dressed as Tori in her first solo video, ah, too perfect! being irrelevent to the story of the song, however I can see why the other was picked. but I would definitely have voted for this one!! Its very moving!!

It makes me sad that not many are aware that this song was written for KA. Its about how his family acted after his death...fighting over his estate...especially his mother.
