Some Say
Tortoise & Bonnie \"Prince\" Billy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Some say I got angel
But I'm just a girl in trouble
I don't think I'm in danger
Don't think I'm in danger
No, I know I'm not in danger
But some have tried to sell me
All kinds of things to save me From hurting like a woman, and crying like a baby
Something like a woman, crying like a baby
And all the things that I have seen
Qualify me for a part in your dream
Qualify me for this dream
And though I'd like to tell it
Exactly how I feel it
Somehow the music
Hides it and conceals it
Hides it and conceals it
Oh, it hides
And all the things that I have seen
Can be hidden in a part of my dream
Gonna hide it in my dream
Some say I've got devil
Some say I got angel
But I'm just this girl in trouble
I don't think I'm in danger
No I'm not in danger
No, I know I'm not in danger
The lyrics to Tortoise & Bonnie "Prince" Billy's song Some Say are reflective of a person who is misunderstood by others. The first two lines suggest the existence of both good and evil in her personality. This girl is in trouble, but she doesn't think she's in any danger. The next lines deal with people who try to sell her all kinds of things to save her from hurting like a woman and crying like a baby. These lines suggest that the girl has gone through some tough times and has felt vulnerable, which people have tried to take advantage of. However, she also asserts that she is not in danger and believes in her ability to overcome her troubles.
The girl further reveals that despite all the hurt and pain she has experienced, she is still capable of dreaming. She is qualified for a part in someone's dream and hopes to hide everything she has seen in that dream. However, music can sometimes conceal her true feelings, and she may not be able to communicate exactly how she feels. She repeats the line "Some say I've got devil, Some say I got angel," which suggests that people have conflicting opinions about her.
The chorus ends with the girl reiterating that she believes she is not in danger and that she is just a girl in trouble. Overall, the song's lyrics depict a strong but vulnerable person who is not easily understood by others.

Very respectable cover...good job Will. Good sincere vocals.
This was always a stunning song by Melanie. I was surprised when many blues artists didn't pick up on it way back in 1971. Melanie put it on the flipside of one of her hit singles. I listened to this instead.
Seems it's never too late to discover real gems.
