Flying Shoes
Townes Van Zandt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Day's full of rain
Sky's coming down again
I get so tired
Of these same old blues
Same old song
Baby it won't be long
'Fore I'll be tying on
My flyin' shoes
Flyin' shoes
'Til I'll be tying on
My flyin' shoes

Spring only sighed
Summer had to be satisfied
Fall is a feeling
That I just can't lose
I'd like to stay
Maybe watch a winter day
Turn the green water
To white and blue
Flyin' shoes
Flyin' shoes
'Til I'll be tying on
My flyin' shoes

The mountain moon
Forever sets too soon
Being alone
Is all the hills can do
Alone and then
Her silver sails again
And they will follow in
Their flyin' shoes
Flyin' shoes

And they will follow in
Their flyin' shoes

Overall Meaning

In Flying Shoes, Townes Van Zandt sings about feeling trapped and tired of his mundane life. The day is full of rain, and the sky appears to be coming down again, causing him to feel increasingly weary with his bluesy life. He muses about how he's tired of listening to the same old songs, and expresses his desire to leave it all behind. He says it won't be long before he puts on his flying shoes and takes off, indicating his desire to escape and flee from the monotonous routine of his life.

As the seasons change, Townes continues to feel restless. Spring is just a fleeting moment in his life, while summer comes and goes, and he still can't shake off this feeling of dissatisfaction. The fall season is a feeling that he can't lose, and he wishes he could stay and watch the winter day turn the green water to white and blue before putting on his flying shoes to take off once again.

The mountain moon forever sets too soon, and the hills are all alone. The silver sails of the moon take off, and the hills can do nothing but follow in their flying shoes. Despite not knowing where these shoes will take them, they cannot resist the urge to leave their mundane lives behind and take off in search of adventure and a life full of meaning.

There is so much deep sentiment shared among those of us who listen to Townes' haunting music. We all know the mind spaces he so artfully painted. It is tragic that that we are all children of the music, all of us, all over the world, yet we we bring  so much senseless, stupid suffering down upon each other. Well, maybe that's the source of the irony Townes revealed. I never met you, Sir, but I would have been so proud to call you friend.

Mr. Goldberg, so poignantly stated.

Fred Garvin

There is NOTHING ironic about his lyrics.

Robert Donaldson

It seems to me that Townes chose to live in the most real terms he could find and Express himself as such. A beautiful and brave soul! Almost from the first song I heard...I new he was someone special. Those of you who feel the same. ..you're special too just for recognizing it!

AC Smith

@j n yeah. If "depressing" was the best takeaway you got from Townes' music I truly am sorry that you missed it.
Life is so much deeper than you know.

Larry Scott

I read once that in an interview, the guy asked him why his songs were so sad. Townes told him his songs weren't sad, they were hopeless.

Salut Greg!
Cordialement.

Your English is infinitely better than my French. Thanks for sharing!
