Last Goodbye
Toyah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She reaches out to hold him tight
"Don't worry, love. I'll be your sight."
A smile appears, he's so polite
His mind's at work in the dark of night

But when the bullet hit his eyes
He never worried ? "Oh, you should've heard her cry"!
He's always ready to take in her lies
But now the time has come, let's say goodbye

Goodbye.

He points the knife between her eyes
It's light reflects on the one he despises
Here's one for the pain, here's one for the lies
When blood flows out I watch her say "goodbye."

But when the bullet hit his eyes
He never worried ? "Oh, you should've heard her cry"!
He's always ready to take in her lies
But now the time has come, let's say goodbye

Goodbye
I love you
I want you dear

Goodbye, Goodbye,
Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye, I love you, Goodbye dear
I needed you and I've used you
Goodbye, dear

Goodbye

I love you
I want you dear

Overall Meaning

The song "Last Goodbye" by Toyah is a haunting ballad that tells a story of a troubled romance that ends in tragedy. The first verse of the song introduces us to a couple that is saying their final goodbyes. The woman tries to comfort the man, assuring him that she will always be there for him. However, the man is distant, lost in his own thoughts. The second verse takes a dark turn as we find out that the man has a violent streak. He holds a knife to the woman's head and takes revenge for the pain and lies she has caused him. In the chorus, we hear the man say a final farewell to the woman he loved, while confessing that he both loved and used her.

The song raises many questions about the nature of the relationship between the two characters. Are they both equally responsible for its failure, or did one person hurt the other beyond repair? Is the man a victim of his own demons, or is he a violent offender who needs to be punished? The ambiguity of the lyrics makes the listener ponder on the causes and effects of the tragic ending.

released 1978, i will never forget as i was multiple operations all around my yes, all operations life or death. i did so , yes, without letting out a cry--i lost 2pints blood with both operations,, it part of my nature.
So yes i understandably played this over and over/ the she, of always believing her lies, goes back to my first Bride. i saw myself as hero against a world out to rub me out--but hell this life we are supposedly given is just really in order to be RUBBED OUT. And yeh i poured in writings Light on my worst enemy, what damned fool was i. So this song brings backs memories very real, but had one good point, i looked splendid in Punk Clubs with Frankentein Scars on my face, and my hai cutt to nothing
