Just Fishin'
Trace Adkins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm lost in her there holdin' that pink rod and reel
She's doin' almost everything but sittin' still
Talkin' 'bout her ballet shoes and training wheels
And her kittens
And she thinks we're just fishin'

I say, "Daddy loves you, baby" one more time
She says, "I know, I think I've got a bite"
And all this laughin', cryin, smilin', dyin' here inside's
What I call, livin'

And she thinks we're just fishin' on the riverside
Throwin' back what we could fry
Drownin' worms and killin' time
Nothin' too ambitious
She ain't even thinkin' 'bout
What's really goin' on right now
But I guarantee this memory's a big'in
And she thinks we're just fishin'

She's already pretty, like her mama is
Gonna drive the boys all crazy
Give her daddy fits
And I better do this every chance I get
'Cause time is tickin'
(Yeah it is)

And she thinks we're just fishin' on the riverside
Throwin' back what we could fry
Drownin' worms and killin' time
Nothin' too ambitious
She ain't even thinkin' 'bout
What's really goin' on right now
But I guarantee this memory's a big'in
And she thinks we're just fishin'

She ain't even thinkin' 'bout
What's really goin' on right now
But I guarantee this memory's a big'in
And she thinks we're just fishin'
Yeah, aw, she thinks we're just fishin'

We ain't only fishin'
(This ain't about fishin')

Overall Meaning

In "Just Fishin'" by Trace Adkins, the singer is spending time with his daughter, who is holding a pink rod and reel while they are fishing. Though she's not sitting still, she shares about her ballet shoes, training wheels, and kittens, and he is content to listen to her stories. He tells her that Daddy loves her, and she responds that she thinks she has a bite. He realizes that this moment, with all its laughter, tears, and joy, is what it means to be alive. Memories like this are what matter, not just the act of fishing itself.

The singer wants to make the most of his time with her because he realizes that she's growing up fast and soon will be driving the boys crazy, which will give her dad fits. He wants to make sure that he doesn't miss an opportunity to form memories that they'll always treasure together.

Listening to this song reading your story brought tears to my eyes...
My friend I'm sorry for the loss of your wife.
I am however, happy for your gain....

Your wife lives on my brother.
God bless you.

Funny thing is I love this song and I am not a country guy I'm a heavy metal guy and classic rock.

Stay strong stay safe

Our little girl told me that this is the song she wants to dance to at her wedding in April 2021. I can't watch this without tears running down my face. Going to be a great day, but tears will be flowing during the father - daughter dance. Love you Toni Marie!!!❣️❣️❣️❣️

Hopefully, a grandpa by now?

I have the same thought as your daughter. I want this as my Daddy/Daughter dance at my wedding. I don't have a ring on my finger (yet) but I've already got songs in mind for different things. A reception playlist, songs for aisle walk, first dance, etc

@angelicamosley3301

This was the song my dad and I danced too

@bradjacobsen9240

This was my daughter's father and daughter dance also. We had it picked out years before she got married. I tear up whenever I hear it. Love the video too.

No Sir. This is about those precious moments when you're a kid and your dad holds your hand...
My dad is no longer in this world but I remember when I was a kid and he held my hand...
Why do we treasure those special moments when they're for ever gone?

@jardineriahyssop6009

Yeah, I miss my Dad too. That's life I guess.

@Noah-dd8wk

Same here I miss my dad I wish he was still here

Craving their foods? It's them knocking again.
Things go missing? Yep! They're messing w/you, trying to get your attention. Talk to them! It doesn't have to be aloud, although they Love to hear your voice.
Hearing their songs? Overhear someone use a phrase they used? Yep! It's them!
