Love Lessons
Tracy Byrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Jerry Kilgore/Ted Hewitt/Monty Powell/Sarah Majors)

Don't be afraid darling you can tell me
What it takes to make your world turn
If you're willing there's time
And if you're so inclined
Just give me a sign
I want to take love lessons baby from you
Whatever it is you want I want to please you
I want to take love lessons baby real slow
Teach me everything I need to know

Take my hand let's talk about us
Whisper soft what it is you're thinking of
I want to hold you tight
Won't you show me how tonight
Let's turn down the lights

I want to take love lessons baby from you
Whatever it is you want I want to please you
I want to take love lessons baby real slow

Teach me everything I need to know
Teach me everything I need to know

Overall Meaning

In Tracy Byrd's song "Love Lessons," the singer is asking their partner to open up and share what it takes to make their world turn, promising to listen and learn. They express their desire to learn how to please their partner and want to take "love lessons" from them. The singer is willing and ready to learn slowly and take their time as they explore each other.

The lyrics suggest that the relationship has not yet reached its full potential, but there is a willingness to learn and grow together. The lines "Take my hand let's talk about us, whisper soft what it is you're thinking of" indicate a desire for communication and intimacy. The singer wants to hold their partner tight and learn from their experiences and desires. The repeated line "Teach me everything I need to know" emphasizes the singer's willingness to learn and demonstrates the trust and vulnerability required in a relationship.

My husband dedicated this song to me when we first started dating and for 23 years it remained our song. Now I've been alone for the past 6 months since my husband passed away at the young age of just 61 yrs old. I still listen to this song often. It is a very special song that we shared. I remember back fondly to all the dancing that we did to this very special song and just how much joy it brought to us both and still brings to me. I miss my husband terribly and will dearly love him and our song, always ♥

This goes back to the mid 90s, back when country music was still worth listening to. No strong language, no sex or drug references, no vulgarity. Everything was kept real, and Tracy Byrd kept it real and still does. I wish we could go back to that awesome decade for just a day.
