Born in Cleveland, Ohio,U.S., Tracy Chapman began playing guitar and writing songs as a child. She received a scholarship through A Better Chance that allowed her to attend Wooster School in Connecticut, and was eventually accepted to Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
Tracy Chapman helped restore songwriters to the spotlight in the '80s. The multi-platinum success of Chapman's eponymous 1988 debut was unexpected, and it had lasting impact. Although Chapman was working from the same confessional songwriter foundation that had been popularized in the '70s, her songs were fresh and powerful, driven by simple melodies and affecting lyrics. At the time of her first album, there were only a handful of artists performing such a style successfully, and her success ushered in a new era of songwriters that lasted well into the '90s. Along with 10,000 Maniacs and R.E.M., Chapman's liberal politics proved enormously influential on American college campuses in the late '80s.

Over In Love
Tracy Chapman Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Shiver loose
Hard rain
To my skin soaked through
So over in love with you
I don´t even care
Sky turns grey
Black and blue
I can´t be moved
So over in love with you
I don´t even care
Hot sun shines
And lays bare
Shadows cross cut
Heavy air
So over in love with you
I don´t even care
The tide that washes in and out
Reveals a heart
And face worn new
So over in love with you
I don´t even care
I don´t even care
I don´t even care
I don´t even care
In Tracy Chapman's song "Over In Love", the singer is depicted as being in a state of complete infatuation with their lover. The lyrics illustrate the intensity of these emotions through the use of vivid imagery and sensory language. The opening lines of the song describe the harshness of the weather, suggesting that the singer is exposed and vulnerable. Despite this, they declare that they are "over in love with you" and that they don't even care about the discomfort they are experiencing.
As the song progresses, we see the same pattern of emotions and experiences being repeated. Whether it is the grey skies, the hot sun or the tide washing in and out, the singer's love for their partner remains constant and undiminished. The final verse of the song sees the singer reflecting on the changes that have come about in them as a result of their love. They suggest that their heart and face have been "worn new" by the experience, but that they still don't care because they are so deeply in love.
Overall, "Over In Love" is a song that explores the all-consuming nature of romantic love. Through the use of powerful imagery and language, Tracy Chapman is able to convey the sheer intensity of the emotions that her protagonist is experiencing.
