Traffic reached a much wider audience when, on the dissolution of Cream, two thirds of that band, one third being Eric Clapton, joined Steve Winwood (during a temporary Traffic disbanding) to form Blind Faith, which also included future Traffic member and sometime Family man, Ric Grech.
In 1970, after the disbanding of Blind Faith, Winwood set about recording a solo album. After Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi became involved, the decision was taken to release this album (eventually what would become John Barleycorn Must Die) under the Traffic name, despite the absence of Dave Mason.
Around 1971, Mason left for good (having been in and out of the band from the beginning), and the the band experienced a variety of personnel changes. The resulting band added some jazzy elements to their style, pioneering the jazz-rock genre, and the compositions tended to stretch out over longer lengths. With their albums The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys (1971) and Shootout at the Fantasy Factory (1973) their popularity in the US grew. After two more albums, personnel problems resulted in the band calling it quits (but for a brief reunion in 1994 without Wood, who had died in 1983). Winwood, Mason, Capaldi, and Wood all pursued solo careers, with Winwood garnering the most success.

Medicated Goo
Traffic Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your body's kinda weak can you think of
Something we can do?
Good golly Polly shame on you
Cause Molly made a stew that'll make a new girl
Out of you
That good ole fashion medicated goo
Ooh - ooh ain't it good for you
My own home recipe will see you through
Freakin Fredy Frolly had some I know
He was last seen pickin green flowers in a
Field of snow
Get ready Fredy there's sure to be more
Mother Nature just brewed it and there's
Nothing really to it I know
So follow me, it's good for you
That good ole fashion medicated goo
Ooh - ooh ain't it good for you
My own home recipe will see you through
The song "Medicated Goo" by Traffic tells a story about a woman named Polly who is sick and weak. The singer of the song suggests a medicine to her that will make her feel better, which they call medicated goo. The lyrics also refer to another character named Freddy who has also taken the medicated goo and has been seen picking green flowers in the snow. The chorus of the song emphasizes the benefits of the medicated goo and encourages people to try it for themselves.
The song has been interpreted as a commentary on the widespread use of drugs in the 1960s. The term "medicated goo" can be seen as a metaphor for the many different drugs that were being experimented with and used recreationally during that time period. The lyrics may be seen as a warning about the dangers of using drugs without fully understanding their effects or consequences.
The lyrics of the song evoke a sense of mystery and surrealism, with references to a stew that will "make a new girl out of you" and a character picking green flowers in the snow. This dreamlike quality is heightened by the repetitive refrain of "ooh-ooh ain't it good for you," which adds to the hypnotic effect of the song.
