Tyler, I wanted to thank you first and foremost for making so many videos with Canadian culture. You always have a respectful way of portraying us and I often get a good laugh with your videos.

I am actually commenting because I wanted to give you one Canadians perspective on the Hip, as like many they have played an integral part of my life.

My mom went to school with the band. They played at her prom. Johnny Fay also had a crush on my mom. My dad used to see them perform in bars around Kingston. One of my earliest memories is seeing the Tragically Hip albums around my house, and my parents telling me those stories.

When Gord was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, the response of the country was like nothing I had ever seen. This is actually what put them on the radar for me as a young woman of approximately 20 years of age. The country was devastated. It made daily headline in the news. When they announced their farewell tour, it caused an uproar as they were doing everything they could to prevent bots and resale tickets. They wanted the fans to be able to come to say goodbye.

The final concert, in Kingston, was televised Canada wide. I actually sat down and watched/listened to the whole show. I sobbed, I laughed, I vibed. It was an amazing feat to see; what I had learned of Glioblastoma at that time is that the tumour infiltrates your brain with tendrils. Therefore it affects a lot of your brains function (ie, memory for lyrics, speech etc.). This man did EVERYTHING to give Canada a proper goodbye… and it honestly was a heroic feat. Sheer will, determination, and Grace, too. It was then that I could say I became a fan. This was August 20th, 2016. Over the next year or so, I became very familiar with a lot of their songs. I met the band (minus Gord) on the 2017 Juno red carpet. I coincidentally was standing beside long time friends of theirs, so I didn’t get to interact much but I finally got to see them in person so to speak.

Gord died October 2017 in Toronto. I remember it was night time, I was on my way home, and I heard the breaking news announcement on the radio. The radio personality was so upset. I sat in my car that night and just listened to hours of their music. I had the feeling that Canada had just lost someone so magical. Someone who portrayed what being Canadian is really like.

In April 2020, my own beautiful Grandma was diagnosed unexpectedly with Glioblastoma. She fought until September 6th 2021 when she passed from this horrible cancer. On her death bed, I sang courage and bobcaygeon. I wrote to them recently, and they actually wrote back to me. Very kind people. My spouse passed away 3 weeks ago, and I sang those songs for him too. Thank you to the Hip… and thank you Tyler for learning about them.

I wish you had read the parts of Wikipedia about their final show: A National Celebration. And, truly, that's what it was.

The CBC broadcast it live and commercial free across all their platforms. TV, radio, even YouTube. They chose to air it instead of the Olympics.

At least 12 million people watched it. *That's a full third of the country*. And that's not counting on the fact that many of the individuals watching it were actually viewing parties. It was played in bars, movie theaters, town square, everywhere. The actual number of people who watched it was probably closer to half the country.

Even the Prime Minister was there.

During that tour, the cancer was affecting him. He needed teleprompters to remember the lyrics of songs he had written and sung for 40 years. But instead of staying home and spending what little time he had left with friends and family, he did this.

He put it all out there. Despite all he has already done, he have the country one last gift; himself.

IMO, he essentially died a martyr for Canadian culture.

You’re going to make a bunch of Canadians cry with this video. We all miss Gord and the hip. The tour was amazing, he hit all the major cities in canada and the final show was broadcast everywhere and canada stopped to watch from wherever we were. Please listen to wheat kings, fiddlers green and scared my personal favs

@stephaniec9539

Impossible not to get weepy when watching this

@Taeolas

We often joke about how the Country will pause when there is a big Hockey game happening and a Canadian team is involved. (Olympic Gold medal, World Juniors, Stanley Cup, etc....)

That final concert by the Hip was one time when the entire country really did pause. It even overshadowed the Olympics in Brazil at the time; the Canadian athletes (and friends) gathered to watch the concert live while they were in Rio.

@crouffer

Yup. Just weaping here... The Hip was my soundtrack from 1994 through 2000 - they carried me through my early 20s

@Veggamattic

Those are all very similar songs...you gotta mix it up a bit.

@cheryllunn2827

Yup, heart in my throat. Not gonna cry...😭😭

My daughter went to see his final concert in Calgary, Canada when she was as battling Metastatic Breast Cancer and we played his song, “Ahead By A Century” at her celebration of life. It definitely described her! So appropriate for her final goodbye!

@hildam8545

So sad you lost your daughter. I can’t imagine losing mine - the pain & grief would be unbearable. Sending you deep encircling hugs - remember to take care of yourself.

@margaretkloppenburg2578

Yes this was her first concert she went to and her last!

@margaretkloppenburg2578

@@hildam8545 thank you!
