She first entered the Gospel scene in 1968, singing with The Edwin Hawkins Singers Choir's "Oh Happy Day." She, with her distinctive soprano and extensive vocal range, became better known as a featured soloist with then-husband Walter Hawkins' Love Center Choir.

While married to Bishop Walter Hawkins, the couple had two children a son, Walter "Jamie" Hawkins, Jr. and a daughter, Trystan Hawkins with one granddaughter, Jahve Hawkins and one grandson, Jamie Daniel Hawkins. Walter "Jamie" Hawkins, Jr. is married to Myiia "Sunny" Davis-Hawkins.

Tramaine has been inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame. Recently receiving the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award and netting two Stellar Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and Traditional Female of the Year for her 2007 CD release I Never Lost My Praise (2007). She also sang at James Cleveland's funeral.

Hawkins lives outside of Sacramento, California with her husband, Tommy Richardson, Jr. of fifteen years and has one stepson, Demar Richardson with two step grandchildren.

When I was about 15 years old, my mother who has since gone to be with The LORD, would literally play this song "repeatedly" all nite sometimes, on an album. She dealt with sickness many years, loved The Lord and fought the battle for life. We knew this was her favorite song and played it at her memorial in 1995. I got out the hospital July 2019 had open heart surgery and was brain dead and on life support for 3 weeks the very next week caught MRSA, pneumonia a stroke and seizures had to learn to walk, talk and everything all over again was in ICU for 57 days but God this song has my breaking down bc God is so good I'm still here and very grateful! This song touches my heart..I've had a rough life, but by the GRACE AND MERCY of GOD I made it through..I was on drugs in my 20's, use to steal to get high etc..I had multiple relationships that were toxic I felt like I had to be high to be myself, I would get drunk daily and get crazy thinking it was ok.. towards the end of 2018 I quit smoking, drinking I've been clean now for a lmost a year, started my own cleaning service, HE CHANGED ME!!! I love that there's a distinction between "changing" and "working".
She says "A wonderful change has come over me", then "I'll do WHAT MUST BE DONE; I'll WORK until He comes". It's clear that a change of heart doesn't mean never going astray again, but it must be a consistent way of life. Living a life God can be proud of requires work on the part of the individual (ex.- actions speak louder than words). It's not enough to just say we believe; we must show that our hearts and minds are no longer filled with what we want, but rather what God needs us to be filled with.
